La Vita Nuova is a unique and enthralling Horror Adventure style visual novel that immerses players in a world of mystery, madness, and mayhem. From the very beginning, players find themselves in a dark and foreboding setting, kidnapped and bound in a dingy room by a girl introduced as Eirin, the headmaster of the Mansion where they find themselves being held captive.
The protagonist, Lochwyrn, is a cynical and self-defeating individual who is initially complacent about their situation but soon shows opportunistic tendencies when presented with options for escape. Lochwyrn appears to have some limited knowledge of the arcane and belies a mysterious latent power that others seem to obsess over, much to their detriment. Lochwyrn's character is a fascinating one, and the internal monologues provided via in-game text does an excellent job of exploring their personality and psyche.
Eirin, supposedly the main antagonist, is a young, kind looking girl of the yandere archetype who is in a neigh unstoppable pursuit of Lochwyrn and has exceptional swordsmanship skills. She is obsessed with Lochwyrn for reasons that are not immediately obvious to the player and is quite sadistic with her demeanor, having little reservations in harming Lochwyrn for the sake of keeping them all to herself. However, Eirin also has a genuine fondness for Lochwyrn, often doting them on their behavior and quirks by calling them cute. Her conflicting nature makes it difficult to determine her true intentions.
The game is filled with other intriguing characters, such as Kasumi and Meri, twin sister maids of the mansion, who seem to have a slight affinity for Lochwyrn. Of the two, Meri is colder and more direct in her guidance of the player, while Kasumi radiates a warmer disposition despite her more muted indifference towards the player's fate. The mansion's various denizens, from the creepy and heartless to the helpful and kind, all add to the game's mood and overall experience.
The mansion is vast, and every room presents a new scenario. The game's branching story line offers multiple endings, each with its own unique twist. Depending on the path chosen, players can end up in various locations such as a candle-lit wing, a labyrinthine garden maze, or an incredibly well-stocked armory. The game's overarching religious overtones and allegories also add another layer of complexity to the story, giving it a deeper meaning beyond its surface-level horror and suspense. Some endings result in a gory demise, while others lead to indefinite capture.
The game's characters are well-written, and the story keeps you engaged from start to finish, and the shadowy, almost dreary visuals invoke a sense of anxiety that permeates everywhere you look, from the realistic yet distorted backgrounds to the stylized and evocative character portraits. The soundtrack is also quite notable, with a mixture of calm, droning, ambient tracks humming throughout the estate and grating industrial noise accompanying it. The sound design is excellent, with every creak and groan of the mansion adding to the game's unsettling atmosphere.
La Vita Nuova is an exceptional visual novel that delivers an unforgettably enigmatic experience. It's perfect for players who enjoy mystery, avant-garde writing, terrifying predicaments, as well as those who appreciate a well-crafted story line that keeps them guessing no matter where they find themselves
