I was one of the kickstarters for this game, and patiently waited several years to finally read the conclusion to it.
I will say, I definitely appreciate the polish that the game has gone through since I first played the demo--lots of nice touches, the art and UI got a nice revamp, and there are little bits of extra writing I appreciate--particularly if the MC is a halfling. I loved the game from the getgo, but I had to knock off a star for my review because I absolutely HATED the ending, and to wait so long for an ending this lackluster was...something else.
To start with, it felt incredibly rushed at times. I originally played the Ambassador route, and the way Cedric is treated in this is like the devs had completely forgot about him and spent an hour or two rushing to throw him in. Large swathes of the end are "tell, don't show" where things are constantly summarized and we don't get to see any of it.
I never met Layla or Adri in my route, and while I managed to pick up enough context as to who they were, I had no idea what their relationship with Raiden was, why I should care about them, or literally anything else besides the fact that they were here and helping us. I felt more connection to Roux's sister, because at least she'd been properly introduced to us before anything happened.
This lack of explanation goes absolutely for the big reveal about Eric--It felt like it came completely out of left field, with no warning, and felt like it was a big of an asspull to be like "hey, it's okay you overthrew the rulers, because we have this convenient TRUE HEIR." Even the way you find out about it feels overly convenient--the old rulers are only too happy to babble to you about their future replacement???
And finally, the epilogue. I played Lucien and Raiden's poly route, and I felt like I got slapped in the face with Lucien's ending. Part of the whole Thing with their route was that they were an immortal demon with centuries under their belt, and we were puny mortals with decades to live. And instead of cherishing that time, they told us we were too boring and to have fun while they traveled, and only occasionally stopped in for a booty call? The idea of being treated like a sailor's wife mournfully waiting for their seafaring spouse to come home infuriates me enough without taking into account Lucien's much longer lifespan. I'll replay a little more, because I honestly wonder if I managed to get a bad ending to their route.
I still enjoyed most of the game (which is why I gave it four stars instead of three), but the ending infuriated me so much, especially after the wait, that it really soured it for me. I still wonder if I managed to trip some kind of bad ending, and that's why it sucked so much? Maybe I'll wait for a guide to come out and replay it again then.
