In Baba Files Taxes, you file taxes. This may sound boring, but in truth, it is a immersive simulation of the anxiety-inducing monotony of the titular action, one which was up to this point merely positioned as a "meme" (see: "Yoshi Commits Tax Fraud", "Kirby Does His Taxes", circa 2017)
The game therefore brings this to life by putting you in the shoes of someone helping the titular Baba in this mind-numbing exercise. Having to replicate Baba's handwriting is difficult, and the game understands this, rewarding you at the end for attempting your best.
I challenged myself not to use my drawing pen, though mostly because I was feeling lazy and didn't want to break it out for a game about filing taxes.
The methodical tick of the clock highlights the stress of the performance, having to check each box with precision, thought, and carefulness akin to that of a chef putting in the finishing touches in a 5 star meal (see: Ratatouille, 2007), further immersing you in the role of a person helping Baba with taxes.
I highly recommend this game to all ages, even to people who have never played a game before. It speaks to the human condition in a way most big budget games nowadays spend 1000x more effort to only attempt to replicate. Hempuli is a genius game developer and I'm going to give him all my life savings.
