Cardigan rated RUN (DEMO)

Cardigan rated a Visual Novel 3 years ago
A downloadable Visual Novel for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

RUN is a visually impressive FVN that leaves quite a bit to be desired when it comes to writing. Excessive lore-dumps bog down the pacing while critical information regarding the story's setting is hard to glean from the text itself. It had been pointed out to me before, that I would have to read the game's page to understand the setting; the person who told me that was mostly right.

As stated, asset-wise RUN delivers a fun experience featuring unique UI, appealing character designs and creative backgrounds. There are a few choices—such as the redundancy of having the "speaker" sprite appear along its "main" sprite—that could be revised, but nothing that warrants major overhauls.

On its writing, micro-structures work well enough. Aside from the couple of over expositive bits, the dialogue feels natural. However, on a macro level, the amount of lore that's delivered (especially when done through dialogue) explains little that is relevant to the situation at hand. A better use of the "fish out of water" trope would do well to make the world clearer to the reader.

As of writing this, RUN is still too short and mysterious to impart a concrete judgement, but more could be done to improve on the reading experience so it catches up to the excellent visual presentation.
