Hyalinum has some interesting concepts but even for a prototype or introduction it is very rough around the edges. For instance one of the mechanics involves moving side to side on the screen using the mouse until you find the object it wants you to and hold down the left mouse key. This seems simple enough but the mouse movement is not handled well at all. It will only move so far right or left before you can’t move at all and I had to Alt-Tab to another screen, then go back, and could then move normally again until once again I had to repeat the steps above. In another game mechanic you had to right click on the mouse while moving forward to breath. Once again simple enough concept except I have no idea how my character was able to breath on other levels. The third mechanic was this weird level where you just had to keep moving forward. Overall the common denominator was not having any idea how all of this tied together or why my character was doing it. There was no real story being told or if there was it wasn’t enough of one.
I played Hyalinum on Linux. It never crashed. I did notice at least three errors with grammar. There are no graphics options and the performance was poor. The highest frame rate I got was 47 FPS and it only went down from there. The graphical detail doesn’t justify the poor frame rates. Also my hardware wasn’t being taxed at all so I don’t know why the frame rates were as low as they were.
Graphics Engine: Unity
Graphics API: OpenGL
Disk Space Used: 305 MB
GPU Usage: 1-20 %
VRAM Usage: 173-185 MB
CPU Usage: 5-9 %
RAM Usage: 1.9-2.3 GB
Frame Rate: 26-47 %
The goal of an intro or prototype is to get me interested in the final game. I have to say that while the concepts were solid enough the execution was so rough and full of issues that I can’t say I would buy the final project based off this. I finished the game in fifteen minutes and paid $2.92 CAD for the intro.
My Score: 4.5/10
