5 stars because I can't believe such a fluid and intuitive survival horror game can be made with these limitations. Like many players, I wish it were longer, and maybe even a bit more challenging, or at least had the option to be more difficult. The boss enemy was genuinely creepy; the sprites overall are very well done.
The mechanics and controls in-browser really demonstrate how great a survival horror experience could be using this medium. It's incredibly simple, but even with the repetition of textures, it's seriously fun. The inventory management and weapon mechanics are clearly borrowed from Resident Evil, but the first person perspective and controls make it unique; it feels like an update to the traditional survival horror formula in that way.
If a different engine were used, the same principles used to make this game could include a wider variety of textures and items and a strafing mechanic. These additions, along with some added length, would make this experience truly remarkable without much modification. This gives me hope that the traditional survival horror formula could still be used to create some new and interesting games, and that any reasonably experienced independent developer could accomplish this. That's not to say VirtuaWave failed to do it on their own; I only mean that this game could become the foundation of any number of incredible games, almost as an engine of its own. Fantastic job here.
