My first, and lasting, impression was how soft and warm something as
hard as concrete can be made to look, and this game is truly a beautiful
thing. The play with light and coloured fog is otherworldly. There’s also a slight play with contrasts between the strictness of the
concrete and the waves of an ocean or a desert.
+ great architecture
+ exploration
+ art gallery
+ Brutalism
- long (non-interactive) intro
- timeouts that forces me to move on when I had rather stayed
- loading zones not always obvious and no way to go back
- not always in control
The intro did have some nice music and visuals, so not bad in itself, but still felt too long as the intro for a game experience. It's all about expectations for me: I totally expect one thing, but get another. I expect a game, but, instead, I get a movie. Visiting an art gallery (afk), I could easily sit down and watch something like this, but then I would also know that I could leave at any time and move on to something else. I also wouldn't be required to watch it every time I visited the art gallery before I could do anything else. Knowing beforehand that the game intro is long does make it easier, though. Then I can prepare mentally before going in (just as I could in an art gallery).
Advice:
The journey is the destination. Don't rush to get to the end.
If you feel like you're missing out on things—because timeouts and loading zones—then play it again. It's not a long game, so you can easily replay and focus on the things you missed. The long intro does take away a bit from the replayability, though.
Conclusion:
Fugue in Void is a great game and a great
representative of its genre, so if you like the genre, you will also
like the game. If you are set on having “something to do” (other than
exploring and taking photos), then you might want to play something
else, but might also want to give it a try if it’s your first time,
although there might be other games in the same genre that would work
better as an introduction.
