Cardigan rated Trainwreck

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android.

Trainwreck is a really good project for a style of story I don't much care for. Its influences are held in plain sight and that doesn't always come to its benefit.

This VN features a death game. If that evokes series like Danganronpa and The Nonary Games in your mind, it should for this project is heavily inspired by them. More than inspiration, Trainwreck borrows a lot from those two series in particular as an abundance of tropes associated with those games appear here in very blatant ways. Whether there will be twists or adherences to how those originally play out is to be seen, however for those who know the aforementioned stories, the uncanny resemblance will be conspicuous.

Also borrowing from those games, this project features a cast of zany characters with out-there personalities and quirks. One more used to or even fond of over-the-top casts, like those found in Danganronpa, might find enjoyment out of the characters in this one; for the rest of us, it won't be changing any minds. The cast's introduction is pretty well paced and lean, but the characters themselves are grating at best. Each of them are their own brand of obnoxious (which, to be fair, is quite a feat) and when they're put in a room together, the effect piles up, becoming pretty hard to sit through. Perhaps a balance of zaniness and seriousness isn't required, but whatever is going on here is too much to one side.

To its credit, Trainwreck nails presentation. UI, music, BG and artstyle work together to create the correct atmosphere for this story and setting. I'm particularly fond of transitions that mimic the character's actions. The only notable issue comes in the textbox and its buttons; they take too much of the screen (especially on PC) and the text is way too small for it. I recommend the accessibility menu (Shift+A) to increase the text size for a better experience.

This project isn't bad at all, but the derivativeness from similar stories affects it quite a bit. If you're a fan of Danganronpa, you'll like this, if you don't, it won't change your mind. Trainwreck isn't ashamed to wear its influences on its sleeve... but perhaps it should.
