Kevin Cole + SuperTry January 2023 Newsletter

Kevin Cole + SuperTry January 2023 Newsletter

Hey everybody,

We did it! We managed to survive the first month of 2023. Here’s all the stuff I did in January:

SuperTry Grab Bag Jam

The SuperTry Grab Bag Jam has launched and our themes have been revealed!

Jammers have two whole months to find some time to make anything they want, not just games! SuperTry’s patrons have also provided some cool themes to help direct creativity should that be helpful.

I’ll be participating in the jam and documenting my progress as much as possible but I’m currently saddled with a crummy cold so I won’t be talking into a microphone for a little while.

If you’ve joined the jam consider saying hi on the community boards!

Below, Below, Below

So for a good portion of 2022 Joe and I worked in relative secrecy on a small tactical roguelike project that ended up becoming Below, Below, Below.

This month I added some cool features and polished up BBB because I think I’m going to attempt to sell it this year. I also posted some cool videos of BBB in action this month.

SuperTry Patrons who donate $5 or more can play the latest version of Below, Below, Below as well as other cool and secret SuperTry executables.

Goosebuds

(I co-host this podcast about Goosebumps books with my friends Chad Quandt and Paul Ritchey. I edit this one too!)

In Goosebuds Episode 142, we explored RL’s stream of consciousness with The Werewolf in the Living Room, a book that frankly does not contain enough werewolves or living rooms for my liking. There is however more than enough human trafficking perpetrated by local law enforcement contained within these sparse pages. Wild stuff.

In Goosebuds Episode 143, we confronted the Horrors of the Black Ring and reveled in its disturbing dream sequences, its surprisingly competent protagonist, and its implications of a wider jewelry-dwelling evil smoke monster universe. We also get cool nicknames in this episode.

Our Camp Goosebuds for this month had us lads reminiscing about YouTube and Kickstarter and various other corporations that once or still do control our lives.

Goosebuds is also available on multiple podcast catchers if this is your first time hearing about it!

Streaming: Dwarf Fortress

Paul and I continued to expand our fortress, SOAK MACHINES, over on the Continue? Twitch channel! We built a library, made a bee tube, and encountered our first forgotten beast that we’re currently trying to hide from. We’re gonna do more soon!

You can watch the vod on twitch!

Podcast Guest Spots

This month I was invited on to my buddy Drew’s Magic the Gathering podcast, Show and Tell, to talk about Space Kings, the last decade or so of SuperTry stuff, and my favorite commander deck. It’s a good time and Drew’s a great interviewer! I hope I get to go back and talk about my Shorikai deck next time.

I also got to guest star on Interactive Fiction and inhabit the role of VIPER MERINGUE as we battled our way through a slumber war with our giant mechs. There are some pretty compelling robot vs dinosaur fights in this one.

Finally, I was tested on my knowledge of the 1980’s classic film, Airplane on TV And Movie Trivia Pod! I stand by my assessment that it’s basically the same vibe as a Muppet movie with, uh, a few key differences.

Houdini

This month Houdi gracefully accepted her new responsibilities as Senior Breakfast Inspector. She is an inspiration.
