Hey everybody,
Happy New Year! Here’s everything I had a hand in way back in December of 2022.
Space Kings artwork by Bryan Shepherd.
(Space Kings is a tabletop roleplaying game that uses playing cards instead of dice. I made it with and for my friends. We playtested it for nine years and finally released the rulebook in November of 2022!)
This month I released two small Space Kings expansions for playtesting.
The first one, “Adding Grit,” details a new skill for characters in horror flavored campaigns. Grit is used to resist fear and torment and is the first purely defensive Space Kings skill. I also provide three new Grit adjacent ultimates, a new item, and some new combat NPCs that can force Grit flips with special attacks.
The second expansion, “Skilled Ultimates,” provides eighteen new Ultimates for players to mess around with. Each of the Ultimates require a special combination of skills but the prereqs for choosing them are pretty low!
Despite having a degree in writing, it’s always a little strange when I devote a big portion of my month to putting words together. I guess I’m more used to code at this point!
SuperTry Patrons who donate $5 or more get access to these Space Kings expansions as well as Actions Expanded and a bunch of other cool secret games.
Pretend Friends artwork by Bryan Shepherd.
(I co-host Pretend Friends, a Space Kings actual play tabletop podcast, with my friends Hadley St. Clair, Bryan Shepherd, and Brian Townsend. I also edit the show!)
In Episode 3 of Pretend Friends Season 4, The Truth about Wishes, our heroes make a new friend and meet a very, very old friend. I got a couple of very nice messages about Rider, who I was a little nervous about introducing to the show. She’s very strange and a departure from the usual goofy NPCs I typically put into PF.
Episode 4, Embers, was one of those episodes where I feel like every character got an incredible spotlight moment. Burt’s photograph, Diggem on the couch, and Xylobro putting his foot down are all moments that knocked me on my ass. I love this group.
Pretend Friends is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, basically whatever your favorite podcast catcher is, we’re there.
The Space Kings rulebook is available as a downloadable PDF at SpaceKings.space and as a hardcover, full color book at Book.SpaceKings.space.
Goosebuds artwork by Brock Gallagher.
(I co-host this podcast about Goosebumps books with my friends Chad Quandt and Paul Ritchey. I edit this one too!)
In Goosebuds Episode 140, we took a little detour away from R.L. Stein and indulged in The Nightcrawlers, one of my favorite episodes from the first season of The Adventures of Pete and Pete. I don’t often make movies or whatever but whenever I watch an episode of Pete and Pete it gets me pumped to make something, anything! The DIY aesthetic is strong.
In Goosebuds Episode 141, it was my turn to become the Book Master for Revenge of the Body Squeezers, a surprisingly rare Give Yourself Goosebuds gamebook. We marveled at the fun, rapid pace of this one even as our protagonist/vessel didn’t seem to do much but go from one location to the other and be surprised by aliens.
Our episode of Camp Goosebuds this month had a lot of chill video game talk, mostly about FromSoftware and Dwarf Fortress. We all say the word “obtuse” a lot in this one.
Goosebuds is also available on multiple podcast catchers if this is your first time hearing about it!
I streamed some DORF FORT with Paul Ritchey and special guest Chad Quandt over on the Continue? Twitch channel! We dug through an aquifer and I learned about the virtues of double-thick dwarven bedroom walls. It was a nice time. Hopefully we’ll do more!
You can watch the vod on twitch!
I’m running a super chill, laid back two-month game jam this year on itch! My patrons are picking the themes. All submissions, not just games are welcome. It should be a fun time. I will also be participating in the jam!
Sign up on the Itch jam page if you’re interested!
Houdi pursued a bold new strategy of demanding more playtime in December. She likes to wrestle!
