Kevin Cole + SuperTry March 2023 Newsletter

Kevin Cole + SuperTry March 2023 Newsletter

Hey everybody,

Here are all the things I did in March (that I can talk about):

SuperTry Grab Bag Jam

The SuperTry Grab Bag Jam has concluded! There are a bunch of cool submissions you can check out on itch including SuperTry’s own untitled skateboarding game.

Big thanks to my patrons for providing the prompts and supporting my work! I’m gonna keep working on our Untitled STGB Jam Project and give it a name and a few more levels this month.

Pretend Friends

(I co-host Pretend Friends, a Space Kings actual play tabletop podcast, with my friends Hadley St. Clair, Bryan Shepherd, and Brian Townsend. I also edit the show!)

In Episode 5 of Pretend Friends Season 4, If Knot Now, When?, the barflys meet up with a friend in the sewers and solve a devious puzzle. I don’t often prepare D&D style puzzles for my Space Kings games but it was fun putting a little Legends of the Hidden Temple homage in there.

Episode 6, Swisstopher, is another Pretend Friends episode in the genre of “The Host Introduces a New Quirky Character and Everyone Riffs for 90% of the Episode.” We also develop some lore and themes and get a glimpse of the impending ultimate challenge for our heroes.

Pretend Friends is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, basically whatever your favorite podcast catcher is, we’re there.

The Space Kings rulebook is available as a downloadable PDF at SpaceKings.space and as a hardcover, full color book at Book.SpaceKings.space.

Goosebuds

(I co-host this podcast about Goosebumps books with my friends Chad Quandt and Paul Ritchey. I edit this one too!)

In Goosebuds Episode 146, we revisited So Weird, a turn of the millennium Disney Channel original series that’s close to my heart. Thankfully it also holds up as a great piece of spooky media for kids. The theme song rips.

In Goosebuds Episode 147, we delved into the confusingly named Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid of the Goosebumps 2000 series. Despite featuring a card based TTRPG and chicken-footed knife-dwarves this one was mostly just bamboozling.

In Camp Goosebuds this month we talked a bit about growing artistically and our various paths to our current creative work and lives. We also talked about formative media and I got to bring up my favorite children’s book, Great Cat by David McPhail.

Goosebuds is also available on multiple podcast catchers if this is your first time hearing about it!

Podcast Guest Spots

Last month I was invited to reprise my role as Cadewyn Silverleaf, everyone’s favorite F-tier elf, on Three of Hearts, a Space Kings actual play podcast. In this episode, Cadewyn and his more competent SUITS coworkers perform a delicate infiltration mission at a SKULLS prison. Concussions ensue.

I was also invited back to TV and Movie Trivia Pod to test my knowledge on perhaps the greatest Disney movie of all time, The Emperor’s New Groove. Brian and I basically agree that Kronk is the greatest character in all of literature.

Houdi

Houdi reminded me this month that even when positive changes happen in your life, it’s still possible to get a little stressed out. Drink water, make some time to play, and be kind to yourself.
