Note: game is still in its early stages with many things subject to change.

Hello everyone,

I don't know why there's this thread while the devlog forum is here. Oh well, doesn't matter, I'll just talk about the game in better detail here, I guess. I am working on Roses Will Rise, an SRPG Visual novel.

Story:

Four women locked in a dungeon after having their homes burnt down. The four, while of different classes and backgrounds, band together to unleash an erupting attack from inside their captor's castle, destroying his forces inside out. You take the role of an exiled doctor, a sigilist witch, a holy princess and a blacksmith's daughter as they fight for their freedom, discover their locked potential, fortify their arsenal and fight side by side as sisters.

Gameplay:

(not final artwork)

  • The visual novel half of the game would be the cutscene, character building, story telling and a hub for the quests, both main and sub, item crafting, etc.
  • The battles are your standard SRPG fare where you will move in an area and fight off different enemies, depending on how things go, I might change things up for a few of the battles.
  • While the battle is standard, some of the characters in the group play fairly unconventional roles:
    • Firalda (Blacksmith): Leader of the Roses, she will break, weaken enemy equipment and in the same time boost a fews specific stats of her party with her "rallying" skills.
    • Thereaedi (Doctor): Works similarly to the chemists in Final Fantasy Tactics, throws healing medicine to heal allies and poisons and acids at enemies to damage them. While her ranged attacks are strong, she suffers from a smaller moving radius than the rest of her comrades.
    • S'ouila (Witch): Acts as a traditional magic caster, but also specializes in trap spells, that can bind enemies to place and can cause chaos on the opposing force with the use of her land marked sigils.
    • Megline (Holy Princess): The other healer in the group, while her healing is in shorter range than Thereaedi's, her prayers will heal a greater amount but will sacrifice her own health in the process. Megline also can cast wards that can nullify physical or magical damage.

Crafting:

Works more like trading than actual crafting, really. Since the game is set within a castle, there's no exact currency that can be useful, instead you will be collecting "salvage". Salvage will work as a currency for the game to be used in the hub to create items and equipment.

  • Firalda (Blacksmith): Being the blacksmith her role is obvious, she will craft the weapons and armor for the party. However some of the stronger gear can be found through the sub quests.
  • Thereaedi (Doctor): While a doctor, Thereaedi has a bit of a shoddy hand in making medicines. While crafting, there's a small chance for her medicines being poisons and acids. She will tell you the medicine is made if it's a hit or a dud.
  • S'ouila (Witch): S'ouila channels the powers of the old gods to aid you in your quest, she's the vendor of a special type of subquests that are harder than the rest, but the rewards can be worth the trouble.
  • Megline (Holy Princess): Megline acts as the save point of the game.

Quests:

Ideally, the game's main questline will be five chapters long, with the 4th being a fork on the road of the story's path. While the the sub quests will be optional, a few of them will be needed to unlock certain endings in the game. Sub quests can be found while conversing with the party members in the hub section of the game, some will be missable, others will be available for extended sections of the game.

Workflow:

At the moment my full focus is to get the first chapter 100% done, I've got it set up where I can update it in small but very frequent increments. I'm building it and updating at the moment piece by piece, it holds a good portion of the graphical assets needed in the game. So, once I get that out of the way, filling the gaps in the rest of the game won't be a problem, especially since I got the story written and done.

That's pretty much Roses Will Rise, probably a little too ambitious in some parts but things have gone smoothly for me so far.

Prior to the itch community, I had a subreddit to log the changes that I've been making for the game. I will still use it as it is a quicker access for me but I will update this from time to time. I also have a public Trello board too.

Since I have labeled the game under "alpha" in the Google play store, you need to opt in to find it there (which is just one link click), you can find that link here

Version 0.0.6 update!:

Possibly the biggest update yet:

  • Megline and Vascur placeholder sprites added
  • Minor sprite placement fixes
  • Added "devlog" button on start screen that leads to this thread for changelog lists.
  • Start screen menu buttons are now at the center of the screen.
  • Added "select' sound effect, not final, just added because why not?

Version 0.0.7 update:

  • Firalda and Megline's sprites get resized to a more reasonable size.
  • Addition of Firalda's father's placeholder sprite.

Version 0.0.8 update:

  • Addition of guards' placeholder sprite.
That concludes the character placeholder sprites, I will now work on the placeholder backgrounds.

Started throwing in the first placeholder background, I might just copy paste it all over the code until I have the rest of the backgrounds ready.

Not necessary at this stage of making the game, but I obscured a few of the sprites to emphasize that the protagonist doesn't know who she's talking to in the beginning of the game - just for fun.

of course, this is all placeholder art, so it doesn't represent the final art of the game.

Version 0.0.9 update:

  • Addition of silohuetted versions of S'Ouilla and Thereaedi's sprites in the cell scenes.
  • Firalda's cell placeholder background added.
  • Animation and transition refinements.

For the past 2 weeks or so I was testing out the animation method that I'll be using in the game, the sprite shown here is not final but it's close to what I've been looking into having the art look like in the game:

Version 0.0.12 update:

  • Proofreading.
  • Addition of general castle background placeholder.

I now should be done with all the chapter 1 placeholders, I should start working on the finalized art :D

Couldn't resist working on the character art and managed to get one of the protagonist have at least some sort of portrait done her, just to give an example on the kind of art I'll be going for in-game.

good

Version 0.0.15 update:

Facing some issues with the Android SDK and can't update the Android version because of it. I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong so until then, I updated the computer version (PC/Mac/Linux)

  • changed selection sound
  • added "roses" theme (music - placeholder)
  • added final still of Firalda's dungeon cell background (with plans of probably animating it)
  • torchlight fire crackle in some bits to give better atmosphere

Game available here, also please check out the Roses Will Rise community for more behind the scenes material.

Also available on the Google Play Store

Been a while since I updated the game due to some difficulties! Still facing problems but I had included a small test for the battle system, right now it's just placeholders of the main protagonist in an empty space with no target to fight with. In time I'll add more things onto it in time.

the test is available on the page here

Version 0.0.16 update:

not a big update, but I have been inactive because my laptop messed up recently. So this is just me trying to get back on track.

  • Added Megline's bedroom with and without Megline at the balcony.

Version 0.0.18:

I completely forgot I had this post here, I skipped a version in this thread, sorry about that. I mostly post in the game's own community here:

https://asatiir.itch.io/roses-will-rise/community

I found a gaping plot hole in and some very amateurish grammatical errors in the script. I sought out to fix these problems and ended up with a tidier script that I'm happy with, it may not look like much from the the player right now but the script is much shorter, with faster pacing and better writing than the previous.

I have also included a system I wanted to introduce later in the game, it is now a part of the first chapter which will help later once I have the battle system up and running. This system is akin to what you see in TellTale games and visual novels where your decisions play a factor in the story and unlocks certain quests and conversation options for you in the future. I explained into more detail in a previous post here.

The image transitions aren't 100% complete as I will be drawing new graphics for the game soon, these will be included once I have more art ready for the upcoming versions

Changes:

  • Complete script overhaul: shorter, less exposition, better paced with more interaction
  • Trust system: your decisions can change parts of the story and affects your party performance during battles (battle system set to be included in a later update).

Not much of an update with this version, added a few placeholders, some size fixes and the rest is more to help with the rest of the game past chapter 1.

Changes:

  • added new placeholder for the intro.

Hi all, it has been a while since my last update. This update isn't that big but now the intro is fully illustrated with placeholders that will be changed with finalized art through the next updates. I also fixed some of the code and the transitions that I seem to have overlooked since I've rewritten the script. They should mostly be fixed, otherwise I will fix them once I get to making placeholders/final art in that particular scene in the game.

Changes:

  • Intro fully illustrated with placeholders
  • Transitions got a little fix in the entire chapter
  • some script changes.

I added kind of a "tutorial about how I do my art for the game on hexels here:https://itch.io/t/58735/tutorial-my-coloring-and-shading-method

Been a while since my last update, was distracted working on my nanoreno project even after nanoreno was over. Since Game Expo is near, I decided to get back to working on Roses since I'm trying to submit my game to their competition (which I have doubts it will qualify from the incomplete state the game is in). but I managed to add a few things in this update

Changes:

  • Added portrait - Firalda Shocked
  • Entire game reformatted for Ren'Py's latest format
  • "Changelog" button in main menu replaced with "support on patreon"
  • Different "temporary" main menu until I could figure out the new GUI better
  • "missing subtitle" bug fixed, but will need realignment in later update
  • Centered dialog text

I'm not sure if the new format broke anything if you're trying to update the game (I actually doubt it will update anyway since it's a completelty different project file), but as a safety precaution I would recommend you delete the old game and install the new one in its stead. I will not be held responsible of any bugs or broken saves that will result from the update.

Updates to the game have been going slow since I have been busy finishing up the bonus wallpaper for my supporters, it is 78% done with only two more characters to finish.

Had an art stream for it just a few days ago, you can watch the speed paint version of it here:

Wow, so many updates) that is so great)

Thanks, man. Progress has been going slow due to the wallpaper, but will be back at it once I'm done with that wallpaper.
