Open The Gates!
Hey everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read my devlog for my indie game titled: 'Open The Gates!'. I will try to keep the devlog as short and as to the point as possible. If you find this interesting please consider following this page as I will be updating it every other day. So, let's get started. What is this game in short?
Elevator Pitch:
Open The Gates! is a side scrolling siege game where players build magnificent castles in various levels spread throughout five charming worlds. The objective is to destroy the enemy who settled on the far right side of the map. The game is about sieging the enemy and fending off enemy sieges with slightly wacky troops and structures.

Start of Project until 21st of March.
A lot has already been finished on the development of this game. Because it is so much I will show some snippets of the work I have already done on the game.
Structures
In order to produce units and gain resources the player has to build houses, barracks, archery ranges etc. The structure construction system has been completed and includes a scaffolding animation. This is what a structure looks like when it is being build:
Units
Wow this was a tricky one. I had this interesting idea for how the units would stand next to one another. Instead of forming a sort of queue they would interlock with each other in order to create more dense armies. The idea was simple but the execution was ridiculously complex and so this took me way over a week to implement. This is what it looks like right now:
User Interface
For the User Interface I decided to go quite simple and easy to understand. There are four main 'resource types' in the game. These are: Wood, Stone, Food and Population. The first two are gathered from natural resources and food can be harvested from farms. Population is acquired by building houses. Population is required to build units, food to sustain them and wood and stone are building materials. Here is a quick video showing the User Interface.
Furthermore I have also been working on the attacking systems for both the ranged and melee units. Next up is the most exciting part of the entire game. Sieges! The enemy will build armies and intelligently launch assaults on your castle. Stay tuned to this post to see more updates!
Thanks!
