Can you only play the top row animation of a spritesheet?

I noticed that the text instructions didn't explain how you can play lower rows of animations, and when I tried to play lower row frames in an animation, it didn't work. What I mean is if there are 4 rows of 123|456|789|10 11 12, I can only play 123. Is that just how the plugin works or am I not doing it right?

Simply turn your character to that direction first. Down-left-right-top.

I also have this issue now where the animation stutters and glitches out for a bit before playing the smooth animation, how can I fix this?
