Building Complexity

During my experience with programming I usually pick out certain methodologies and design patterns that are good for building complexity and making complex systems more scalable. I feel like that is the right direction for me whether it is for making games or not. Having said that, games are a great application for this kind of approach so I have continued with them but veered towards making better engines and not really getting to build content for them. This can get pretty tiring developing cool features that never get shown or made into something great because of scope creep and losing interest or moving on to the next cool feature I thought of. I just wonder if anyone has any thoughts on what direction I should consider? Are there other fields that need this kind of approach? Does anyone know of an active group focused on artificial life simulations or for developing open endedness in general? Should I just grind out an MVP with what I have?
