Can I sell my deck?

Hi, Decker community :)

Before I ask my question, I'd like to start by expressing my gratitude. I've only just started using Decker, but I've already fallen in love with it! Thank you so much for creating such a wonderful tool.

I'm a pixel artist and indie developer, and I make a living by creating things and getting paid for them. I'm thinking of using Decker to make a new game, and I'd like to sell it and exhibit it at events like the Tokyo Game Show if possible.

Is it possible to sell/exhibit the decks I make? If it is possible to sell them, how should I handle copyright notices, etc.?  (I know a little about the MIT license, but is it really okay?)

Also, if anyone is uncomfortable in any way, please tell me honestly. I think that many people are sharing their works and code for free, and that this is helping to develop a nice community, so I'm just asking to be sure.

Sorry for the long post.
Thank you!

I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding is for Decker itself, yes. The MIT License basically means that Decker can be used for most any purposes, including commercially, with the requirement being that you put the license in the documentation.

It's worth noting that this applies to Decker itself and modules and such included in the example decks, but not necessarily other materials or resources - e.g. if someone else has made a contraption or a module and shared it then it may be worth checking with them how they feel about commercial use.

There are quite a few Decker projects that have "pay what you want" set on itch, and some have been included in Indiepocalypse bundles so there is some precedent for paid decks.

So I'd say that for Decker you're fine, but if you're using any resources from other community members and there's not an obvious license attached then you may want to check with them first if they're OK with it.

(Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this)

Thank you for your reply!

I don't plan to use anything other than what's included in the Decker itself(on GitHub), so I think it'll probably ok.

I may not be able to share what I'm going to make with everyone, but I'd be happy if I could contribute with other small deck, modules or contraptions :)

Do you think you'll sell what you make on itch? Or only at like conventions or shows?

I plan to sell it on itch.

Welcome to the Decker community!

Anything you create with Decker is yours.

Everyone is allowed to sell, exhibit, or distribute their decks however they like.

In addition to all the materials distributed with Decker itself, I extend this permission to any code or other resources I personally post in this forum.

It isn't a requirement, but I would appreciate it if people who make things with Decker included a link somewhere in or around their project to the Decker site and/or Itch page in order to help more people find out about Decker. We're still a very small community, and we need help to grow. Please also consider tagging creations with "#decker" so that your fellow deckbuilders can find your work!

Thank you for your reply! I got it.

I'll definitely include those links in the project. And of course the tags too.

Once again, thank you for making Decker :)
