How to distribute restricted links to an HTML5 game?

Hello! I'm trying to publish an HTML5 game on itch.io for the first time and I've run into a problem. It looks like a bug to me but it's also very possible I've misunderstood something.

The issue is: I generated a restricted link (at "Dashboard > Distribute > Download Keys > Create Download Key") for a friend, but when they click on it all they see is "Nothing is available for download yet."

This sorta makes sense, since there isn't technically anything for them to download, but I would expect them to be able to play the game in their browser. When I go to the game page as the owner, I can play it just fine.

Am I doing something wrong?

Other information from "Dashboard > Edit":

  • "Kind of Project" is "HTML"
  • Under "Uploads", there is a single zip file (which contains an index.html) and has "This file will be played in the browser" checked
  • "Visibility & Access" is "Restricted"

edit: I enabled password access, and that works to let my friend play the game! so I have a workaround, but it still seems a bit odd that I can't get restricted links to work
