I have played through both of the stages in Demo 2 and have jotted down my thoughts.
Positives.
- Graphics look great and evoke the Castlevania 3 aesthetic.
- Original enemy sprites and character sprites look good too. I like the armless monster lady and crawling lady.
- Hitting things with the whip and the jumping arcs feel just as satisfying as the source material.
- I appreciate that checkpoints are frequent.
- Walking up stairs doesn’t slow you down.
- Two sub weapon slots is brilliant, although I hope that a sub weapon drop feature when you collect a new one is implemented eventually.
- I liked that when I fell off the stairs to the dead zone, I ended up at the bottom of the previous screen before dying. Very neat.
- Skeletons on motorcycles!
- I like that you implemented the rope mechanic from the GB games (Also butt)
- The cross equivalent weapon has a neat touch where you recover a bit of MP if you pick it up after.
Negatives
- No music is a bummer. I get that this is a demo, but playing through these two stages in total silence is pretty disappointing..
- I wish that I could press the Up + whip button to use a sub weapon.
- I do not like the invisible floor tiles and the gotcha tentacles by the stairs.
- I think it’s a cool idea to fall from the waterfalls in level 2 and not instantly die, but it is ROUGH having to huff it all the way back. I thought at first I was in a different route for the level but was pretty bummed that I just had to retread an old section, with all enemies respawning and my life very low.
What I want to see
- Unlimited lives as an option would be great for any players that just want to breeze through and play the whole game.
- Would require way more effort, but it would be cool to see this game evolve into a non linear game in the vein of Simon’s Quest. I could easily see a simple RPG system being added to this, but obviously it’s whatever the dev wants to make it.
Overall, I think that this is a solid proof of concept that scratches that Castlevania itch. I hope that this project is seen all the way through.
