I'm making a top-down pixel art game about a famous knight whose fame has been lost over time. Nobody remembers his name anymore. However, he can get his popularity back beating someone or something.

He is the knight we're talking about:

I've just started this project and made

-some tiles:

-some decorations:

UPDATE:

He can now walk, it's my first top-down game so I faced some bugs but now everything seems working. Instagram Video

I'm now working on:

  • the shooting system (coding, blueprint)
  • drawing some other houses (decorations, pixel art)
  • the main tilemap

First fifth of the main map DONE

Now, I'm working on the shooting system. This knife will be one of the weapons:

Bellissimo

Grazie!

I'm working on the shooting system at the moment.  Here is a video.

It works pretty well but it still needs to be improved. Before perfecting the shooting system I'll make the health system and I'll start creating the enemies, just to make sure everything works the way I want to. The first enemy I will design will be a peasant.

I've just fixed some bugs related to the shooting system. I'm almost done coding the health system too, I just need to make the progress bar widget.  And...of course, the 'died' function and its flipbook. I'll update again soon.

Health system + Health Widget DONE

I'm currently working on the 'died' system, enemies and levels

I've made the 'died' + respawn system. Say hi to this gentleman! (He is the first enemy you'll face but he can't move, yet)

General Update

Level Design: I almost finished the first level.

Art: I drew other houses and improved fences.

Coding: I have to complete the shooting system of the player + make various systems for the enemies.

The art looks really nice! I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project

Thank you!

Art Update:

I drew this fountain.

I really like it tbh.

Level Design Update:

I posted a video from the player's point of view (on Insta).

I hope you don't mind me not posting any replies on this devlog for a few days! I'm trying to make and improve all the enemy and shooting systems. At the moment I'm creating a few more flipbooks.

Enemy Update

I thought  that making all the enemies the same would be very boring (like moving the same way or with the same characteristics). So for the first enemy I made a paper character who follows the player but almost never faces him (wonder why? you'll have to wait for the story to know!). He doesn't attack, yet. Here's a video.

Art Update:

Sickle. (Peasant's weapon)

Enemy/shooting system Update

Finally, the enemy/shooting systems work pretty well. Here is the video and two random screenshots:

Now, I have to work on effects, the enemy spawner, and other things to finish building the first level.

I just created the enemy's spawner. It's simple but I like it.

The video is on Insta.

Art Update

Black and white fountain (it's a portal)

Bugs :/

I have to put every tilemap in the same level 'cause it's the only way to make teleport work :[

Art Update

Fences looked kind of weird so I improved them.

Level Update

Btw, the first level is almost finished: I just need to place some actors, fix some things and add a timer WBP. I'll update this devlog again ASAP.

Level Update

The level 1 is completed! (not really, I still have to make the music, the save system, the story... but I'll leave these details for later).

Like always, I'll leave a video and a few screenshots.

SaveSystem

It works.

Hi! Cool stuff you started developing your own retro game! Would you be interested in having a free 8 Bit Platformer Mini Music Pack? If so, let me know and if you like it we can see how to further enhance your game!

No, thanks, I make music myself

Save System Update

It's been a while since I don't post on this devlog. I'm trying to save by using checkpoints, I've tried a few systems and it seems to work in editor mode, I'll try shipping and I'll update again in a few days. Oh man, save systems are the most boring and annoying part of making a game.

By the way, this is the checkpoint:

Yeah, I want to keep everything simple.

Update

I understood how save systems work. However, I think I'll code it when I'll finish the game, I still have things to add to it that I haven't done, yet. Tomorrow I'll start uploading updates about the second level.

Art Update:

Just a key. Or, maybe, the main object of level 2.

Art/Ideas Update

I thought hard about this new level. I was thinking of setting it in a modern  library. Okay, that sounds weird, but it'll make sense to those who will buy this game.

I spent too much time thinking so, for now, I just made floor tiles :')

Art Update

The library. (Seen from the outside)
