i really like the game!

i am a bit of a turbo outrun aficionado. :)

i like the upgrade system, and the time mechanic is clever, but it's a little counterintuitive to have to hit down to see different upgraded parts in each category.  i'm also not sure i get the weight reduction "upgrade".  what does it do?

i also got a bit stuck: i was on 3rd stage and my lamborghini's engine kept blowing up and i couldn't complete the game, as i replaced it, but that one blew up too in pretty much the same spot in the same stage.  i also noticed once your engine is blown, on the upgrade screen you can leave without fixing it/upgrading the engine, which ends your life immediately upon the start of the stage.

i was a little surprised the stages are a bit different from the original game, more generic.  in the original as I am sure you know, each stage is a US city and the idea is you're progressing across the country.

a few small things that i love in the original game i'd like to see:
-the sega band that plays above the finish line
-your girlfriend leaving and going with the rival if you lose (and coming back if you win)
-barrels/cones that you can hit
-oil slicks that make you skid and (most importantly) can be lit on fire if you engage turbo while near them

oh yeah i LOVED the test drive inspired level  :)

i think the game is super cool and i enjoyed it!

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the game so far!

- About the upgrade system: do you have a suggestion that would be better than pressing down to scroll through the upgrades? I've been thinking about this for a long time, but I can't come up with a better solution. (And I don't like pressing a lot of buttons to navigate, so I thought this would be a good solution.)

- The weight reduction is very beneficial with the heavier cars. Less weight means better acceleration and less brake wear.

- About the engine that keeps blowing up: let me guess: there's steam coming out of the car? And you can't use your turbo? If so, your radiator is leaking and your engine doesn't cool down anymore. Your engine will overheat and eventually blow up prematurely.

In the next big update I'm going to add text warnings and messages for people who don't really understand what's happening or what all those visual cues mean.

- About leaving without any repairs: that's on purpose. After each race, whether you finish or not, you can do at least 1 upgrade and do some repairs. If you want to sacrifice a live, you can exploit this and, after you blow up your engine, repair/upgrade your car without replacing your engine. You immediately quit the next race, and you can then replace the engine. Now you have a new engine and an upgraded/repaired car!

- About the generic stages: I know. I never intended to replicate the stages of Turbo OutRun. Check my rendition of the Turbo OutRun logo. I deliberately removed the American flag so I can have the freedom (no pun intended 🦅) to do my own thing. If I could, I would draw my own trackside objects.

However, most of the stages have only one repeating trackside object and I'm going to change that. It's a tedious job to put them in, but I'm going to throw in a random generator that will do that job for me.

- About your suggestions:

- The band is a good idea!

- Your girlfriend leaving is something that I'm going to add, but it will probably only happen if you complete the original mode, instead of after each race.

- I'm about to make those objects very soon! I'm already thinking about how I'm going to program it.

- Oil slicks... They look cool. Maybe I'll add them 😁

The next update might take a while. I'm also working on a new game mode: just cruising through random stages without a time limit. And I want to add and improve quite a bit of things so I can proudly call it v.0.4 😆

Hi there! sorry, the email that you replied went to my junk mail!

I’ve played it a few more times and the upgrade system is starting to make a big more sense, I guess my only suggestion would be to try to make it as simplistic as as the original… maybe it would be nice when your game thinks you should upgrade your engine, that one is pre-selected rather than having to find it in the up/down list?

I think more text warnings about what’s happening with your engine / what you should do would be very helpful. I think most outrun players are just going to hit the accelerator and never let up… at least, that’s how i play! :) So if that is causing engine damage we should be warned.

One thing I was noticing, I think the shifting key-binds are messed up in the web version when using the keyboard (and not using automatic shifting). Q and W do not seem to shift. A and Z seem to go up and down the gears but Z is also accelerator so I am thinking this is causing some unintended issues….

The just crusin’ mode sounds wonderful.
