Interesting question. It would be good to know the intention behind this. Maybe there is none. It might be because of name spamming or because names might be common or share too much with game names. If people would use their names, I guess there would a be a lot of Henrys.
But the unrelated name thing also applies to the username. So who knows.
I meant the intention of itch in regards to the feature ;-)
Is it doing what it is meant to do? Is the way it works now some side effect? Is there a reason that display names can't be searched, but account names can? That kinda things.
And depending on the word, it will find roots of words. For me, if you try redoni with the i you will find an account starting with redon but no i. So it obviously puts emphasis on partial name matching. While I can be found with full name or at least more letters, like redonihunt without the er, I also have next to no followers and that other account that starts with redon but still get's found with an i follwing, mistyping the name, does have over 100.
It is similar to developers naming themselves like blah blah studio or blah blah game studio or whatever. People are lazy. No ones gonna search blah blah enterprises. They only type blah blah and expect results.
So I guess, if you want to be searchable, at least have the root of your name be the same in display and account name.
