SOLVED! Support request: Cannot sign into app when using GitHub authentication; unable to assign/reset password

My MacBook died so I had to take it to the Genius Bar. They ended up wiping it, so I'm having to reinstall all my apps and redo my settings. Before I sent it in, I had the desktop app working. Now I  am able to log into the itch.io website normally, but when I tried to log into the itch.io desktop app there is no option for it. I tried using the username/password combo for my GitHub account, but got the same error. Google research indicates that this is a known issue, and the previous workaround is to assign a password in your account settings. However, none of the saved passwords in my browser or other password managers are working. If I try to reset the password, I get prompted for an email.

Unfortunately, since I used GitHub, my email is not on file for me to use to recover the password. I have tried the email associated with GitHub, but I get an error indicating there is no account with that email.

How can I remedy this?

All accounts must have an email address to exist, even if they were created through OAuth (eg. GitHub login). There is no requirement for that email address to match the one on your third-party account.

Are you currently logged into the account you are having an issue with or is it another account?

To reset your password without access to your password you can use the “Reset Password” page here: https://itch.io/user/forgot-password. Keep in mind you will need to have access to the email currently on the account.

Hope that helps

Please don’t submit username/password combos from one platform into another. Only the platform you created the account on should that receive that information, never tell your password to anyone else.

I solved it. I realized that I had added an email address as well the last time I had password issues. Once I entered the correct email, I was able to recover my password.

For future reference, make sure to set an email and choose a password, even if you've set up GitHub authentication.
