I have a game in my library that has been telling me through email that it has a new update available, unfortunately I do not know to update i without having install the entire thing again and more than likely lose all of my progress
You shouldn't lose all your progress, unless the game is poorly coded and stores your save files in the installation directory. Even then, it's not a given, depending on how the upgrade process works. To make sure, ask the creator.
