The tutorial is indeed long, but it is a fairly complex system and a lot of players were getting some things incorrect. It's a one-time tutorial anyway :)

Unlocking chapters is an integral part of the gameplay! You earn gold by creating clothes for clients, which gives you the gold to buy more items (in case you're into designing), or continue with the story. Certain parts require you to design clothes instead. This is how I tie the story to the designing portion of the game. Tailor Tales Plus, which is the paid version, does not have any requirements to unlock chapters, this is solely for the free version. Hope that explains it!
