Hey guys. I have a quick tutorial but it's part of a bigger series. I wanted to go over how to create some grass from top down view. The grass tiles in this tutorial will be 16x16px each. I want to have a few variants. I'd look up Zelda: The Minish Cap as reference because it's a really great example.
If you look at the grass here, you might notice that the grass is just a single cluster of green with a few patches of details. So what we could do is have a background layer and a detail layer in front. On the detail layer, we can add whatever details we want to show in front of the grass. For now, I'll draw some spikes of grass hue shifting towards blue.
We can also sketch in some patch of dirt.
We can use a mid-tone grass color and some shadows in the dirt to take the texturing even further. So you could end up with something like this.
Another way to illustrate grass is pretty similar but the spikes of grass are brighter, hue shifting towards yellow, and there are little dents in the grass.
If you wanted to add mushrooms, flowers, and pebbles, you can do that too.
So those are some of the ideas for grass. It's a pretty short tutorial but next we will add a tree to the scene. So stay tuned for that!
