I built a prototype of an educational game that will allow children to create their stories in the form of an illustrated book and share them on a website.
I need a 2d artist to take care of all the art (backgrounds, characters, objects, UI/UX design, etc...)

Don't work for free! Every artist deserves to get paid for their work. Charge a fair amount. No amount of work experience is going to fully prepare you the next gig because the next gig is always going to be different. There's always more to learn on the fly so just charge a fair amount or at least something as you gain experience.
