Check out Fold Wars - a back-to-the-basics 2D Tower Defense game.

Bad enemy arrives in ship and sprints towards your gold mine to steal your gold. Your goal is to place towers in its path and kill them before they carry the gold back to the ship. The enemy path is not fixed and you have to strategically place towers to elongate it. 

There are 4 different tower types to choose from and 8 different enemy types to fight. You can play the battles at 4 different difficulty levels, depending on your skill. This game mechanic allows a lot of possible solution strategies to achieve your goal. The success of the strategy is quantified in a score. After the battle is over you can inspect the strategy in a "Strategy Inspector", where you can see your actions plotted against time and see the results in the form of many graphs.
