Game Engine Free Downloads

Hello. I'm a bit confused on where to download a free version of Unreal, Unity, etc. to use non-commercial and for learning. I looked on their websites and they keep saying that you need to pay in some sort of way. Maybe I'm missing something to find the downloads? Can anyone reply to this discussion for links to these engines? Thank you!

I just checked the unreal site, and it's straightforward - click on the big Download button presented in the center of the page, takes you here

https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/download

and the page states What does it cost? It's free to use. And mentions the 5% royalty if you make a lot of money somehow,  scroll down and there are instructions to download the epic games launcher which is where you install the unreal engine (and also where you get epic games).

But if what you want is free, I suggest you try godot, which is open source and thus really free.

It may seem like a silly question, but it actually isn't (for Unity). If you google "unity download", depending on which site you land on, you need to navigate a bit to land on the proper (free) version...

Anyway, if you're interested in Unity: just go with the free "Personal" plan. It's free until you make more than $100K in a year with your (or your company's) Unity activities.

Download the latest LTS release (it's currently 2021.3.1f1 - next week it may be different, but don't worry about that - don't try to chase the latest versions unless it introduces something you really need). You should install Unity Hub first to manage your Unity versions and projects. Just go here:

https://unity.com/download

Lol typing this discussion felt silly to me, but I was a bit confuse looking for the links. But anyways, thank you!

Btw, if you're on a mac you can also use brew to install unity by typing "brew install unity" (and also godot)

https://brew.sh/

though of course you'd still have to create an account at some point
