How do I turn off email notifications for games I have purchased?

I've been receiving a steady stream of unwanted emails regarding projects that were part of the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality and Indie bundle for Palestinian Aid that I pruchased.

I have gone into Account Settings > Email Notifications and unticked & saved "New devlogs and updates from projects I follow" and "New uploads are added to something I bought or follow"

Despite this I am still receiving emails, such as this one yesterday:

I have seen that there is an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email, however this will only unsubscribe me from this one particular project. I will have to manually unsubscribe from every project, and only once I have received an email from them. I would like to know what setting I need to change to stop receiving all types of this email, before I receive them.

Cheers.

You’re eligible to be emailed by developers for projects you’ve purchased that have made it into your purchased library. I’m trying to understand what happened here so I can best help you, did you run some kind of script to put every single bundle project into your library? By default, our large bundles are intentionally configured to not immediately put every single item in your library to help avoid issues like being bombarded with emails of things you bought but aren’t explicitly aware of because of the nature of the bundle.

Yes, I used a script to add the bundle games to my library.

What setting do I need to change to stop receiving these types of emails?

(1 edit)

Well, I'm now unsubscribing from these emails as they trickle in one by one.

I've had a look through my email notification settings once again and can see no indication that I have unsubscribed from anything, what I remain subscribed to, or how to resubscribe to projects I may become interested in in the future.

I've unsubscribeed from a project that, on second thoughts, I'd like to receive these kinds of emails for. How do I go about resubscribing to it? I can't see a list of any of the projects i'm currently subscribed to and un-subscribeed from.

Also, how do I go about unsubscribing from these projects before I receive an email from them in my inbox?

(+5)

This is taking a very long time to get a resolution, are you still trying to understand what happened here?

  1. I'm getting emails from all of the pjojects from the Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality and Indie bundle for Palestinian Aid that I pruchased.
  2. I can only unsubscribe from these projects once I receive an email from them
  3. I can't see a list of projects I'm subscribed to so I can unsubscribe from them prior to receivng emails from them
  4. I can't see a list of projects I'm unsubscribed from so I can't resubcribe if I want to receive emails from them

I'm beginning to wonder if receiving these unsolicited emails and the lack of control to unsubscribe prior to receiving them is a GDPR violation. I'll have to look into that.

Just a heads-up, I don’t get notified of any of your replies since you’ve been replying to yourself (as indicated on the message above the reply form where you have been posting).

You ran a third party script that had unintentional side effect: you subscribed for owner-updates to every game in an incredible large bundle.

I can undo the effect of the script for you if you wish, please make sure to reply to me if that’s what you want.

Thanks

(+6)

Okie doke, thanks for the heads-up.

What does undoing the effects of the script ential? I ran the script because I wanted the games in my library, what I don't want is the subsequent emails I am receiving.

The problems I'm facing are:

  1. I'm subscribed to a large number of projects that I'm receiving unwanted emails from
  2. I can't unsubscribe from a project until I have received at least one email from it
  3. None of the account settings allow me to turn off these emails
  4. The list of projects I'm subscribed to is not visable anywhere I can find
  5. The list of projects I'm unsubscribed from is not visable anywhere I can find

If I run the script on your account then it will only show items that you have previously downloaded on your main library page, and you’ll have to access the bundle page or go to a projects game page to be able to add it back into your main library.

Tell me if you’d like to go ahead.

(+9)

No thanks, what I'd like is proper control of emails being sent out to me through my account settings. Let me know when you have something like that.

(+2)

Was my reply from 14 days ago done the right way now or are you still not getting these messages?

(+6)

I've double checked and this is definitely the way you want me to reply to you, so I can only assume that I'm being ignored. Ok, good to know.

(+8)

Glad I'm not the only one having this problem. There ARE projects I wanna get email notifications from but it's annoying that I get emails from EVERYTHING I own and not everything I'm FOLLOWING.

Admin

So I can best understand, did you run a third party script to change your account? See my previous post here: https://itch.io/post/5179939

Thanks

(+16)

No, I did manually claim every game in the BLM bundle. I didn't know at the time I'd be emailed about every single game I claimed I'd figure you'd have to follow the games to receive updates. I don't see what a script has to do with this. this is about a mailing oversite from this site.

(+19)

I really don't undestand why there isn't a simple option to enable and disable these emails. Not having these products in my library doesn't seem like a valid solution. I don't want to have to open a bundle every time I want to find something to play.

(+4)

I agree.

(+12)

I also wish to unsubscribe to all the emails. I'm probably just going to put "postmaster@itch.io" in my spam folder.

(+14)

This is pretty disappointing.  I've been getting these emails too, after buying the Ukraine bundle.  Haven't used any script, just been manually going to the download page so items get added to my library.  I never wanted any emails from creators.

And yea, I don't want to miss normal itch.io emails, but it looks like there is no other option.  A shame.

(+7)

I checked never send me any e-mails. We'll see how that goes before I need to start flagging anything from itch.io as spam. I like the concept of receiving updates from developers, but it should be opt-in, not just receive e-mails because a game is in my library. Clearly some developers only joined the bundle for marketing purposes.

(+2)

i'm facing the same issue

(+7)

Same for me, unsubsribed from All emails what was possible on Itch website, but still  receiving emails. Mostly every day some. It's a SPAM, nothing else. I moved all email from itch.io to SPAM folder and reporting it, because it's insane, that's not possible to unsubscribe it.

(+4)

Thanks for confirmation on that.  Was waiting to hear what happened.  Guess it's time to filter it all to trash, or spam.  Either way.

(+5)

Looking for a solution to this as well, without resorting to blocking all itch email. (Claimed all games for the purpose of syncing them to my playnite library)

(+12)

itch.io is such an extreme example of a very very good concept (hence its popularity), very very poorly executed.

(+15)

Judging from the comments of the admin "leavo" and my own experiences there is currently no way to object in an easy manner (unsubscribe) to all emails we are getting regarding the Itch.io service. This means they are in violation of GDPR article 13 part 2.

To be clear, the GDPR does not differentiate how these emails came to be. "leavo" is insinuating these emails are the result of adding all the purchased products to a global library. However this is a normal and intended usage of the websites functionality and thus not outside the scope of the GDPR.

I hope the Itch.io staff will realise they have to comply with the GDPR if they wish to do business inside the European Union and implement the required functionality within a reasonable timeframe. Otherwise I am forced to report this violation to the appropriate authorities.

yikes.

(+4)

Have you made a report yet?  Would like to hear the response you get from whomever it is gets the report.

Admin (5 edits)

Can you confirm if you ran a third party script on your account so we can better understand what happened?

We’ll be adding some more granular control for these types of bundles, but in the meantime we can reset what you did when you added all the games with the script so you can access games as was intended.

Edit: Just want to note that you can also use the “Never send any email to me” option on account settings to also block these emails

(+17)

Why do you keep asking about scripts? That isn't the problem. The problem is how your mailing systems currently operate. No one should be subjected to mailing spam if they decided to add alot of games to their library. Doesn't matter if it was done by a script or done manually.

In my case everything was done manually.

(+12)

Whether or not someone used a third party script is outside the issue. It's the website/service that is the problem.
Opting out of these emails shouldn't be more complicated than changing a notification setting. It's ridiculous that the service's "solution" is to exclude the games we purchased from our library in order to not be spammed by tons of unwanted emails.

(+11)

Yeah, I really have to agree with everyone else; running a script has nothing to do with it.  You're trying to deflect the issue by implying that using a script caused this to happen.

The same thing would be happening to someone who went, one by one, adding the same items to their library by hand.  You should really stop trying to scapegoat something that has no bearing on the situation.  It makes you (or itch, assuming this is something they're specifically directing you to say) look foolish.

Two solutions (one of which is terribly unacceptable).

Per the admin Leafo, they can remove the games you purchased from your account.  Now, arguably you still have the ability to get the game (you still own it), however you have to re-add it in order to access/download it.  ie. Go back to getting the spam.  Not really a solution.

Alternately, setup a rule via your email provider or email client to automatically delete any email from postmaster@itch.io (or send it to spam, or other similar location).  Not sure what other emails you might miss from itch, but at this point...  Do you care?

I went with the latter.  I want to be able to get the products I paid for.

I am in the US.  Getting slapped into emails like this isn't a cultural thing.  It's a scummy business thing.  And not to be rude, but the GDPR bit you guys have is new.  It's not like companies have been unable to do this in the EU since the birth of the internet.  They've just recently had to stop.

The admin here is trying to blame people using a script for the issue; that is intentionally attempting deflection.  He understands the issue, but he/she/the company does not want to accept blame for it.  A script didn't make these emails happen.  Adding purchased items to ones library does so.  Doesn't matter if a person used an automated method to acheive this, or manually added the items.  The result is the same.

Good luck with your mail to their support.  I wouldn't hold my breath, however.  And please do report them, if it is actually a GDPR violation.
