What's that, You have iron tools and got some more carbon ore but haven't got any iron ore? buy some ingots or take the iron tools and beat em apart and shove all the materials into the smelter (Carbon goes after, it won't automatically take carbon even if iron is smelting or if they were both placed in at the same time) Now you got Steel

little side note.
I love the loading screen weapons.
Love seeing that my Greatsword-Spear both still makes a polearm (and also looks fan-f******-tastic with a curved blade/katana blade)
But also Love seeing that many large-bladed spears, swords, daggers, etc are on the loading screen... Not sure if it just selects 3 random parts to show or if it shows actual item combinations. But its nice. Thanks.
