[ANSWERED] Questions regarding Subtitles

I would like to know the following:

1 - Is the subtitle module only for JAV titles?

2 - Is it possible to use the subtitle module on it's own without doing a catalog first? I tried the catalog option and I wasn't happy about the extremely long subfolder description for each title and the fact that it puts the title ID at the end. It would be more helpful to have the title ID at the beginning of the subfolder name and to restrict the description to a maximum character length of 50 for example.

3 - Do JAV titles have in general subtitles (hardcoded or softcoded) or you are relying on audio machine transcription to generate the subtitles text (in the new project).

Sorry about too many questions, but subtitles is a kind of a hobby for me for some time.

Hi there!

1. Subtitle module is only for JAV subtitles. It does not search for any other kinds of subtitles.

2. There is no option to do just subtitles at this time, though this might be added in the future. In regards to truncating folder names, you do have options as Jav-It can use alternate naming conventions to only use video IDs, or catalog IDs, etc, for folder names. In addition, if this isn't as flexible as you were hoping for, a feature to limit folder names to an arbitrarly length is planned and will be added to the Patreon version of Jav-It. That might make the default behaviour better for you.

3. Subtitle depends completely on the author, as most videos do not come with subtitles natively. Jav-It only searches and obtains subtitles which are softcoded (obviously), which can be found in human translated English, or machine language translated English (From another original language source). 2nd or 3rd generation translations are not included as they are considered unreliable and not accurate. The Patreon version of Jav-It has built in language translation capabilities as well, so it is possible to bring your own subtitle that Jav-It does not know about and translate it too. Likewise, only the first subtitle definitions update is avaliable on Itch.io. All the latest updates are only avaliable via being a Patreon supporter.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

2 - Hopefully the new cataloging version will put the title names at the beginning of the subfolders and not at the end. I noticed that the directory script changes my title names to capital letter. I would prefer it not to change the case at all and leave the titles as they are in my library.

3 - I have to admit that I have never come across any JAV titles that have subtitles in Japanese, whether hardcoded or softcoded. I came across a site that has low quality titles with hardcoded subtitles in English, but no softcoded titles. In Europe it is common to include softcoded subtitles especially to help HOH (Hard Of Hearing) viewers. You mentioned that Jav-It only searches for titles with softcoded subtitles. I think there is an added benefit to search also for hardcoded subtitles so that Japanese speaking members can use that. Besides, hardcoded subtitles can be easily extracted using a method that I developed (It can be time consuming considering the length of these JAV titles between 2-4 hours). Please PM me if you need details.

I would love to see how the basic subtitles.mod works. Can you please let me know if there are any Hunter titles included in this module at the moment? Thanks.

Hi again,

Jav-It does not make use of hardcoded subtitles since it is too impractical. First you would need to download the entire video in question, then extract a mask around the subtitles, perform OCR on the subtitle text, translate the text to English (If not already there), then rebuild the timing information for the subtitle. Multiply this work by how many video files you want to convert and you'll see that softcoded subtitles are way more feasible. In regards to Hunter titles, yes the latest subtitle definitions does have them. However given the popularity and size of the studio, I can't imagine there being too many entries.

Hello again,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I think I wasn't clear about what I meant with regards to JAV titles with hardcoded subtitles. I didn't mean to do the conversion to softcoded subtitles (and later on to do the machine translation to any other language which is the easy part) using any of your development tools. What can be really helpful is to make a list of JAV titles that have hardcoded subtitles in any language, preferably in Japanese. It seems to me that finding a JAV title with any sort of subtitles is like finding a needle in a haystack, so at least if you come across a title that has it, mark it as one that has hardcoded subtitles in your updated list. It is then up to the individuals to decide what to do with this information.

Ah, I see. You just want to know if a subtitle even exists or not (So you don't try to search for something that doesn't exist)?

Yes. Exactly.
