Is it impossible to download restricted access games through the app?

I am trying to allow access to a small group of people to a game through the itch.io app.  I've tried  setting it to restricted access and using  a password and a download key but I just get the error JSON-RPC error 12000: itch.io API error (400): /games/1097323: invalid game.

It can be downloaded directly from the website, but I really want to do it through the app so that people don't get the warning from windows re: unknown applications.  Is this possible?

At the moment, only restricted games that you own can be downloaded through the app. Password protected games are not supported. Sorry about that, it’s a known issue.

Hi  there and thanks for the response.  Could I technically release the game, have them download it, then un-release it?  I am wondering if that would get round the problem?

Sharing a link to an unlisted game will let people download the game. It will not let them “own” the game though, so un-publishing the game may create issues with them viewing the page, but they should still be able to run the executable they downloaded when it was available.

Another approach is to create a download key group for the restricted page and then had out those keys.

Great, thank you, I've just tested it using a download key from a group and that works fine.
