The Minstrel Questions and Feedback

In Arcane Art:

About halfway through, it says:

Everyone present will feel the power and meaning of your performance,

What is the “meaning” of my performance? Is this supposed to be the same as the “one specific emotion or feeling” from the first part of the move?

Another question:

In the sidebar it says:

Magical effects last until the end of the performance. Emotional ones endure until it makes fictional sense.

Which effects are magical? Which effects are emotional? Or, how can I tell magical effects from emotional effects?

Thanks! :)

In Well Traveled:

I would change

whether you parted ways in good or bad terms

to

whether you parted ways in good terms or bad terms

The bold formatting is actually part of the suggested changes. This would be to make it clear that “good terms” and “bad terms” have mechanical significance (and then I’d bold them again at the end of the move).

When I got to the end of the move the first time I read it, I went, “Huh? What are good terms and bad terms? Where did those come from?” I assume my players would be more confused initially if I showed it to them. XD

EDIT: This is a GREAT MOVE, by the way! I love its take on the Bardic Lore and Port In The Storm that the DW Bard has.

Fixed :)

As for what "good/bad terms" mean... it's up to the Players to expand on them, as mentioned in the move itself:

describe how long ago and whether you parted ways in [good terms] or [bad terms], explaining briefly the gist of the circumstances.

I met this Xulomon guy before! Last time I saw him we left each other in pretty good terms. You know, I introduced him to his soon-to-be spouse. I wonder what they've been up to all this time.

I remember meeting Kolga the Reaper in my travels. It was a brief and unpleasant business. I hope they forgot about the ceremonial dagger I made them loose in a gambling contest. They were pretty sore about it, as I remember.

Stuff like that :)

Arcane Art

This should make it all a bit clearer:

Everyone present will feel the emotional power and meaning of your performance, but only your target audience will also be magically affected. Pick one:

That does make it clearer! Thanks. :)

In An Ear For Magic:

I would change:

or someone they taught to or learned from.

to

or anyone they taught or learned from.

which I think is better English and more clearly states what you seem to be going for here.

Developer

fixed :)

In Charming and Open:

I would add onto the second option like this:

if you answer honestly you can ask them a question from the same list, which they will answer honestly.

If this isn’t the case, obviously don’t add it. But if it is the case, this clarifies that your question will be answered honestly.

Good catch :)

In Eldritch Tones:

Does this move cause Nasty harm to people? Or does it just cause the equivalent of Nasty harm?

If it actually causes Nasty harm, I would remove the words “equivalent of” from this move.

Developer

Fixed, it's directly and truly harm.

In It Goes To Eleven:

The word “fucking” in this move changes the tone of the game, in my opinion. I would need to remove it from this move for any of the groups that I play with. To make the game more Accessible to, say, audiences who don’t want sex to feature in their games, I’d remove that one word from the list.

EDIT: “Orgy” (used earlier) already has a sexual connotation. You could keep that one if you wanted to, although personally I would change it to something else as well.

Developer

mmm... interesting considerations!

Would "bacchanal" be better than "orgy"?
Would "fornicating" be better than "fucking"?

Also, for context, what kind of groups do you play with, that you would feel the need to change these words?

For me, “bacchanal” would be better than “orgy.”

“Fornicating” would be better than “fucking,” but I would still remove it.

The groups I play with typically do not want sexual content as part of their RPG experience. Yes, they could just not pick that option, but having a move that allows you to make everyone start having sex feels weird when one doesn’t want to include sex at all in their fantasy roleplaying experience.

The 10+ and 7-9 results of Reputation seem strange. It seems like, in some cases, I might prefer to get the 7-9 result for this move, so that I only have to say a positive thing about myself. I can’t think of any other moves where I would often prefer a 7-9 result. Is it ever better for the player to get a 10+ and share a negative thing about themselves?

Developer

Good catch... I meant for a different thing to happen.
Here, this new formulation should add the missing part ;-)

7-9 = tell the World a positive or a negative thing they’ve heard about you; the World will come up with the other one

I like this change a lot! Very nice. :D
