How can I make my game more challenging or less repetitive?

I've been working on this project on-and-off for a while and the latest add-on I just done was the leaderboard to try to add some kind of competition feeling. However I feel that the game is not challenging enough or that it kind of get repetitive after awhile.

I am looking for some feedback or suggestion on how to make it different.

Hi Terzom,

I took a look at your game. I can see what you mean by the game being not challenging enough, or that it gets repetitive after a while.

In general, with games like this where you have to do the main task over and over, it’s better to have something changing over time, to change the game a bit. Usually this means making the game more difficult. Here are a few suggestions:

  • The difficulty is being raised over time.
  • The time left to make an answer becomes less and less.
  • Some new feature appears after level 5 or level 10.

One other thing I noticed, is that the game mentions it is meant to challenge the short-term memory of the user. When I played the game, the challenging part for me was telling the colors apart, as at some point they look the same. For me, I didn’t feel my short term memory being challenged. I felt my eyes being challenged instead.

I would suggest to make the color options that appear to be more distinct from each other, and add some kind of delay from the moment the user sees the color, to the point they have to pick a choice. Think of it like, the user clicks on the target color, then it disappears for something like 3-5 seconds, then the color choices appear. Bonus points if there is something else distracting within this time, like a colorful drawing of a cartoon character walking on the screen. That might be more challenging for the short-term memory of users.

That’s all the ideas I could think for now. Everything I’ve mentioned here is my personal opinion, it’s up to you to decide if you like it :)

Hi Dark,

Super thanks for your feedback, it really helped and sparked some ideas. As it's for now you can go on forever so it would make sens to 'collect time' depending on how fast you are, and the distraction idea sounded good as well, background changes etc.

Yeah the short-term memory stuff I am not sure would be true, maybe it should be called something else, same thing with the name actually, never gotten any better idea of game name.
