Just wanted to say thank you for hosting the Jam. Even if the number of entries is modest, there's a load of progress that's gone on which can't be measured in digits.

I kicked off my attempt and soon saw I needed some functionality my IF library didn't have. So that became my focus, and I ran out of time to make any kind of game (or even much of a demo).

But if it hadn't been for this Jam, Balladeer would not have gotten its new Interaction Trees feature. So thank you Pekapeque!

And good luck to everyone left with a few hours to go.

Just in case you're not on Discord, maybe post here instead.

Hi Nico, what kind of music do you like making? Is it electronic/synth or do you play other instruments?

The Discord invite link gives me an Invite Invalid error. Has it expired maybe?

Thank you, organizers and judges!

This Jam really helped accelerate the development of Balladeer, and I hope to do more work like this in the future.

Thank you very much! That means a lot to me :-)

Thank you for playing!

This is my first real text adventure and it was difficult to guess how big to make the map and what the connectivity should be. Sorry you got a bit lost :-)

I do think that using the web like this gives more opportunities for a nice interface, compared with some of the older IF systems.

Thank you Icehouse. It's fair to say that my focus was shared between the game and development of the library which supports it.

I think right now the game is a decent demo for Balladeer. And it's also a work-in-progress which I might continue with. Since it's on Github, it's there for others to tinker with, too.

EDIT: This was a reply to Icehouse's post above, but for some reason it keeps appearing down here.

Cyber, that's great, thank you for coming back to have another go!

I'm really glad you got so far. It ought to be possible to say 'give the Briony to Freda'. Maybe you did that but the game didn't report what happened next.

At the end of the Jam I ran out of time and had some family commitments so unfortunately the 'win condition' isn't as obvious as it could be.

Hi Yazorius,

Yes, this is the first real text adventure I've made with my Python library which is called Balladeer.

It's not a great title for a game, but the original inspiration was the CYOA book City of Thieves. Of course, the characters are different and there's no combat. So that's where the similarity ends :-D

It's great to read you say you'll be exploring more. That really gives me motivation to continue in this direction!

Hi Cyber,

Thanks for taking a look. The symbol does appear (and there are some other illustrations too) but I guess I didn't make it easy enough to find :-)

Hi, I haven't been around much. Did I miss theme voting? Or is there no theme?

Please see the game page for instructions.

Hi, it'd be great to catch up on Discord.

I can't seem to log on without it asking my mobile number though. If I don't manage it, I'll be in touch on this site instead.

Thanks for all your work organising NarraScope!

Hi Stewart, thanks for the reply.

In my case, any audio would be background music or effects. So nothing that would add to the length of the thing, only (hopefully) the experience.

Likewise, any images would be alongside text, not in place of it.

I totally get that this Jam's about small pieces of work punching above their weight :-)

:-D

Hey goliard. I logged in to see if there'd  been a response to my earlier question, but there wasn't.

So, hi! Sorry this isn't the answer you were looking for, since I am not anything to do with the Jam.

I actually think that if you're able to make something good with so few assets (words or images, whichever it may be), then any amount of scaffolding around that should be for free.

There's a difference between the work itself, and all the promotional artifacts which are necessary to put it in front of an audience.

In a Jam which, to me, seems to focus on simplicity and brevity, it's inevitable that any messaging and publicity will outweigh the actual piece. So that shouldn't count, in my opinion.

But then, who am I?

Actually, I seem to be the only person willing to answer your question right now ;-)

Hi there, I realise that this Jam is about doing more with less :-)

There are specific constraints on the size of the submission (1000 words of prose or 9 panels of sequential art).
How do these constraints apply should I want to work with both text and visuals?

My common sense interpretation is that I should maybe split the allocations (111 words less in exchange for one image panel).

Also, are there any limits on the amount of audio allowed?

Thank you so much, that means a lot to me. I wasn't confident anyone would take to it!

Hi Jupiter, I just checked out your YouTube channel. Thanks for all the work you do! Lots for me to catch up on.

Sorry the server was slow for you. It's only a single VM, and the music files sometimes take too long and spoil the pacing. Also it's in the UK, which might affect you if you're in North America. :-)

Really enjoying the feel of your game. I like the way you've integrated the character dialogue with the action.

Carmen Brittunculi is now working! It has taken longer than I expected. I've tagged this latest version 0.14.0.

Making text adventures is harder than I thought. But I have managed to build one out of a minimal set of modern web technologies.

It's a Python game. Instructions for installation are on Github.

You should be able to play it on any platform; that means phones, tablets and PCs of every kind. Just now there is a display issue in Microsoft Edge, so please use a Chrome or Firefox browser instead.

If you don't feel like downloading and installing the game, you can play on the server at http://brittunculus.online.

Carmen remains a work in progress, but I'm finally happy to show it around. And it's Free Software; you can use it as the basis for your own project if you want.

Really like the background music! Got a question for you; I struggle with this myself. What speakers do you use to mix it? You have to anticipate how the player might hear it, and that could mean anything from a small smartphone speaker to a soundbar on an HD TV. Since your game shows a roomy 3D world, I might suggest adding a bit more reverb and some stereo separation to fill all that space?

Thanks, Grim, that's great!

Hi, I submitted this in a previous MytholoJam:

https://tundish.itch.io/carmen-brittunculi

It was barely functional :-) I'd like to get it finished so that it's worth people's time to play.

I see there's a rule precluding games begun before the Jam. Would you be prepared to make an exception for this one please?

I'll start off. My game is Web-native HTML5, CSS3. Python back end. Avoiding JavaScript if possible.

Thanks. Although I still haven't been able to log in to Discord. I think they must be having some problems at the moment.

I've certainly done enough CAPTCHAs for one day. Maybe the topic for a future Jam :-)

I'll keep trying though!

Hi grim! Discord is telling me the invite is invalid or out of date. Are you able to create another? Thx.
