Wait so. Is this the full game for free but it's £5 on steam? Or is this version the demo version and the steam version is the full version?

This is for anyone to answer!!! :D
Just wondering something. If someone leaves a document at home but they live alone. Is the solution to act like the document is fine? In nightmare mode I sent them away due to not having their document and no one to verify it was left at home. Then got the face grow in the back because I sent away the correct person. Will it ALWAYS be the correct person if they live at home and left a document or is it just a 50/50? Just find it scary to let them in when I can't verify so I assumed sending them away was the right thing to do but then the face grows or kills me for sending them away.
I'll start this by saying I quite literally bought the steam release the day it came out. So I am quite literally a supporter of the game. I bought it on itch.io and steam.
I changed my name so people wouldn't go snooping on other accounts that share the same name. (In fact it's kind of disrespectful to reveal what I changed it from. You not heard of privacy? Like that's not cool dude. I get that you may feel I changed it to pretend to be multiple people??? I have many more things I do outside of That's not my neighbor. I changed it because my original name links back to many other accounts in that name. So for my own privacy reasons not related to that's not my neighbor i changed it. There's many more things to do on itch.io that are not related to that's not my neighbor.). Nothing wrong with changing your name. Does my name not change everywhere? I assumed all past comments would be changed to my new name. So I don't really see the issue. You can go back to any of my old comment and see I'm the same person no? I apologize if it doesn't change my name on old comments. However from what I can tell it seems to.
You have gone out of your way to make ART of these replies. You have done illustrations, my man. That's wild. Nothing I have said is factually wrong (Either I've quite literally quoted things and added opinions to things being either misleading or inconsistent). People are completely valid to assume they will receive free updates with those comments. A smarter move would have simply to have called it "That's not my neighbor 2". Make it clear it's a different thing. A whole "remake" for steam is not made in a day, a week or a month. It takes a long time. Possibly up to 6 months who knows. There was more than enough time for the developer to tell his loyal fans that "A steam version will be released. It is a different game and no more updates will be given to itch.io". Heck just simply saying "This is the final release of the itch.io game". Doesn't even have to say he's making the steam version. That way he can't be accused of dishonesty...because...yeah. It does feel misleading to say any future files will be free to then release future files on another platform that isn't free.
Also, I edited my comment because, yes, you didn’t directly tell anyone they shouldn't have an opinion or have to change theirs. You were clearly trying to enforce that with your weird illustration screenshot comment. It was clearly implied you are trying to convince people that the game no longer showed "upcoming features." You wouldn’t have done that if the intent wasn't to tell people they are wrong to expect upcoming features. However like you pointed out you didn't directly say that despite it clearly being the intent. So I removed it from my reply because I was acknowledging you was right. I was quite literally agreeing with you and changed my comment because I agree you were right. Like....did you want a separate reply to simply say "You're right you didn't directly say that". It seemed more appropriate to simply edit it and align with what you pointed out. Like.......i'm really not sure here. I changed it to be more what you wanted??? Yet you're still upset? Also a lot of people edit comments to slightly adjust some spelling/grammar or even add something they forgot to say.
I have worked for many many indie developers. I have spoken to many many indie developers I have worked with. Even indie developers who have worked on similar sized games. I will not say because I don't want you running over to their games to complain to them. I showed them the scenario and they all feel it was dishonesty from the developer. Mostly due to him having ample time to tell his fans a steam version will be released without updating the itch.io version. It's just not a good move to keep you fans in dark. The backlash is...to be expected. He is only human but he still had more than enough time to think. I feel you see this scenario like the developer didn't have time to think about what he was going to do. Like it was a split second decision without any thinking time. That's just quite simply not the case. Again it likely took many months to remake the game on steam.
People are justified in being upset. That's...just the end of it. You are fine in not being upset. That is completely fine. You're allowed to not be upset. Other people are allowed to be upset though. At the end of the day your main defense is "That's not what he meant by that though" basically. Which is a fickle defense. As I've said plenty. It's mostly inconsistencies that make the developer seem strange. That's the main part that urks me. him claiming he wanted to give the game free on steam for everyone but couldn't. For him to then say in replies that he feels the new game is enough to deserve a repurchase. He's saying conflicting things. Like...yeah there's no way to justify that. Those things conflict...simple. They just do. I'm justified in pointing that out and pointing out there is inconsistency in that. At the end of the day for me personally that's what I don't like about the developer.
if he flat out said from the start it deserves a re-purchase and he had to remake the game so it deserves it. Yeah that's fine. Claiming the only thing stopping him from giving steam keys for free is steam itself limiting how many keys he can give (Which could be entirely true. Which is fine). This indicates he wanted to give the game for free....no? Then obviously the big one of "Why not just release it on itch.io", (which comes from me and plenty of people). If he wanted to "give steam keys free" then..that's also a valid thing to say. He could have just updated it on itch.io. Like...yea. Again that would have been a solution. Can still remove being able to purchase it on itch.io because he wants people to move over to steam but also could have made it so anyone who had the game on itch.io would just receive the new files.
I am not wrong in pointing these things out. What I'm pointing out is factually what has happened and even quotes. It's an opinion that I feel there was deception going on. However I am still justified in feeling this way.
Enjoy whatever makes you happy. Apparently, it's defending random developers online when they're called out for being inconsistent. Then putting way too much effort into your replies. You have way too much time on your hands. Drawing an illustration doesn't somehow make anything you say any more valid? I....just think you might have to hear that.
Edit Addition: Sadly we live in a world where complaining and pointing out inconsistencies from developers it the best way to see change. Negative reviews encourages positive changes. So it's reasonable to expect people who are upset with something to make that vocal and also leave negative reviews because that's the easiest and best way to be heard and encourage a positive change. Do I feel the amount of hate is justified? Only when what is being said is valid. However there seems to have been people who seem instead be bullying. I do not agree with this.
I will no longer be replying to anything you say.
EDIT EDIT: I did not realize he actually did it. He updated the itch.io version!!! He is now back in my good books! Good man nacho
I’m not on either side here, but I do feel it’s understandable to feel misled by the developer. The issue isn’t just about whether the original 'coming soon' features were completed. The developer explicitly stated, 'Remember that if you already bought the game, you do NOT need to purchase it again. The game is bought once, and you will always have access to all future files I upload.' That clearly implies that future updates, beyond just filling in 'coming soon' gaps, would be free.
Now, the Steam version has extra features that itch.io buyers don’t get unless they pay again. That goes against the original promise. If the dev had been upfront about changing their plans, that would be one thing, but instead, they left itch.io buyers behind while giving Steam players extra content. Whether or not the itch.io version was 'complete' by their definition, the fact remains that early supporters were misled.
"Steam's Distribution Agreement does not impose exclusivity; developers are free to sell their games on multiple platforms. "
You are quite literally pulling all this out of thin air. Nothing you have said is correct. You're making yourself believe something that's untrue as justifications. If you want to support the developers decision that's fine. Don't believe your made up misinformation and then distribute that misinformation to other people. That's not good.
like. I am presenting you with facts. There are plenty of games that sell on steam, epic games, itch.io and more platforms. There is no way you actually believe steam has a exclusivity clause???
Honestly at this point I have to assume you're trolling and rage baiting. I would like to believe you're smart enough to not actually believe half these made up statements.
you're not insulting my "ego". Imagine telling a chef of 10 years that cutting meat with a spoon is better. That's how this conversation feels. I'm telling you how the process works and you're saying it doesn't work that way. Even though it does. Then tried to say we agree to disagree. I am factually telling you how the process works.
Also what? Steam has no such guidelines. You can upload your game to as many places as you want? Games release on itch.io, steam, epic store. At this point you are just making things up??? The only guidelines that prohibits uploading a game to another location is if you're the customer. I can't buy the steam game and upload it to another platform...as a customer. As a developer steam does not restrict you.
I honestly dont know what say. This last comment about steam guidelines makes it pretty clear you have no idea what you're talking about.
I literally can't agree to disagree. You're flat out wrong and don't have a understanding of how this works. Like....your insulting my intelligence on a industry I quite literally work in. I've been a game developer 10 years. You're under the impression the process is completely different than it actually is.
Itch.io is not steam. You are not actually "updating" the game when you upload new files. You're simply reuploading the entire game again. You download all the game files again. On steam when an update occurs. It on re-downloads those specific files that have been updating. This is not the case on itch.io. When a "update" for the game is release you download an entire new game. Even if the only new addition was 10kb. You still download the whole 5gb game again (example numbers)
I truly do not understand how you do not realize this. I really do not want to insult your intelligence but I've explained it as clear as day and you're still saying I'm incorrect when I'm quite literally not.
Like. I'm at an inpass here....
Brother, I mean no disrespect, but this is just drag and drop. I've developed dozens of games and even have one attached to this itch.io account. I'm really not sure how else to explain this.
When he updated the game in the past, he would upload the entire game again as a packaged .exe launchable file. This is no different from his Steam update, regardless of the engine update. It's still a packaged .exe version of the game. He can simply take this folder and drag and drop it into itch.io for players to download and play.
Again, I mean no disrespect, but you seem to think the process is far more complicated than it actually is. If it were a console port, then yes, you would need to "port" it. But that's not the case here. It's just an .exe file that he's packaged and uploaded to Steam, but hasn't yet uploaded to itch.io.
Edit: I do think it's important you're aware that this is a super easy process before commenting on other peoples post about it.
Edit Edit: Heck i'll throw in an example. If you were to make a game in unreal engine. You have the packaged game in unreal. People download it on itch.io. You then decide "Actually I want to remake it in unity". You remake the game in unity. You can simply just upload those unity launch files in your "next update" on itch.io. It has no bearing what engine you're using. As a user you're simply just downloading the files the creator is uploading. All itch.io is, is essentially a file sharing platform. You're just given someone a place to download the content you're uploading.
What? My inconsistencies I mentioned are still perfectly valid? I'm talking about his inconsistencies throughout the development stages.
-
He claimed free indefinite updates of the game. September 28, 2024: “If you bought the game once, you won’t need to buy it again. You will always have access to all future updates.” and May 21, 2024: “Remember that if you already bought the game, you DO NOT need to purchase it again. The game is bought once, and you will always have access to all future files I upload.” To then "re-release" the game and call it a different game.
-
He claimed he wanted to give free Steam keys. Said he cannot give free Steam keys because he was limited to 100 Steam keys (which is perfectly reasonable if it's valid). However, if he was set on giving Steam keys for free, that means he had the intention of giving the Steam update for free. If that was the case, he could have achieved this goal by simply updating the itch.io version.
-
He then, in replies, started saying, "I just made another game, the game on itch was finished long ago," making it clear he never planned to give the Steam version for free. His own words in the screenshot confirm this.
-
He promised free refunds and then said he can't because of the 90-day limit (again, this is completely fair. He should have really done research before this. With all the backlash, you’d think he’d do extensive research before making any promises he might not be able to keep).
The game being "finished on itch.io" doesn't mean he couldn't simply release a separate downloadable file that was the Steam version if he again claimed he wanted to give the Steam version away for free for original backers.
He clearly was working on the Steam version for a while. Why not tell everyone, "Ok, guys. This itch.io version is done! I am making a Steam version of the game that is a remake. That remake will not be given to itch.io users because it is a new version of the game"? This may have gotten a tiny bit of backlash. However, nowhere near the backlash he got with all these hiccups. At the end of the day, a fanbase wants to feel like there is honesty and communication between them and the developer. When a new Steam game is released and then told, "You guys aren't getting it because it's a separate game" (and yes, this is basically what he's saying because again he'd just add the files on itch.io for original backers), it's going to leave a sour taste in people's mouths. That’s just how it is. Even more so when fans are expecting updates to the game because they haven’t been informed it is finished. Again, if he was working on the Steam version, he could, in the latest update to the itch.io version, just tell the fans that there will be no more updates to the game because he's remaking it for Steam with new features.
He is a solo developer, so I’m not putting him in the same leagues as a greedy corporate company. However, to say you will give indefinite free updates, then give the game a facelift for a Steam release and claim it's a new game isn’t exactly keeping to that narrative.
A part of development of the game can be re-working it from the ground up. That's very common in the gaming industry, from small indie games (like Risk of Rain (Remastered), Spelunky (HD), and Fez) to triple-A games. That doesn't warrant a re-purchase of the game when updates were promised for free and no prior warning was made to say the itch.io version of the game was complete.
I think you don't understand the process of how the game got updates on itch.io? Every-time the game was "updated" on itch.io the whole game was re-uploaded as a whole new packed .exe launch file. There would be no difference in uploading to itch.io then the steam version. That's literally how he was "updating" the game in the first place. So yes it is quite literally "that simple".
Edit: it's fine if you want to defend him. You are entitled to thinking he did nothing wrong. However it should be understood that updating the game for itch.io is quite literally just uploading the files to itch.io. Like there is no extra process involved.
They are man. You can defend it as much as you want. 90% of the assets used in the steam version are re-used from the itch.io. If not more. The game play is pretty much identical with simply the main differences being that you do certain actions in different places. Like asking questions. The biggest "game play" change is the ability to not let them in.
I get that you're passionate about defending the game. However plenty of games get face lifts during development. In fact it's quite literally one of the biggest stepping stones to developing a game. Sometimes you re-work art, mechanics, UI. That's just development. To say that warrants the title of being called a "brand new game" is insulting to any game developer who offers free update that actually reworks things for their game. Heck i'm a game-developer. I've worked in indie companies where our early version of the game looks and plays nothing like later versions of the game. We didn't charge people again for our game though.
It's simply not enough to be called a new game.
My only issue is he clearly wanted to stand by the "I wish i could give it for free but i can't" narrative. To then promise a free refund (we'll ignore that he didn't realize he can't after 90 days) makes no sense to me. Why not just update the itch.io files. Then everyone is happy no? We all get an updated version and people who do want it on steam or are new can choose between steam or itch.io. It just doesn't really make much sense to me the decision making skills. The only "legit" reason not to have it on itch.io is worrying about piracy. People pirate steam games as well though and plenty of developers have success on itch.io.
I also don't think he's a horrible person. Just that he's making the wrong decision at every turn. Not doing actual research before making statements and overall being a bit too wishy washy with his responses.
Honestly if he outright said "Itch.io people do not get the steam version for free. It's a new game. You have to buy it again" and just left it at that. I feel like they'd be less backlash than what he's getting now.
If Nachosama truly wanted to share his game, he could’ve easily updated the Itch.io version instead of removing it from future updates. Moving to Steam for better security makes sense, but it’s also easy to pirate the Steam version, so piracy isn't a solid reason for not updating Itch.io. Games like Buckshot Roulette updated both versions, proving it's possible to support both platforms.
The developer went back and forth between saying "I truly wish I could give it to everyone for free" and "It's a new build, so I deserve it to be repurchased." His inconsistent stance only adds to the backlash. He broke several promises, and instead of updating the Itch.io version, something that could've easily been done, he told everyone he’d offer refunds, only to realize he couldn’t issue refunds after 90 days. I’m not blaming him for that, but it shows that lack of research led to these issues. It’s frustrating that with such a simple solution, he chose not to take it, especially when some games on Itch.io thrive despite piracy being "easier." This doesn’t seem like a valid reason to avoid updating Itch.io.
If he was truly willing to offer every single person a refund, then the whole piracy argument becomes irrelevant. If he’s offering refunds, it shows he's not concerned about people getting the game for free, which undermines the claim that piracy was the reason for moving to Steam. It makes sense that if he's willing to provide refunds, he could have simply updated the Itch.io version without worrying about piracy.
I think if he had a more consistent stance there’d be less backlash. Even if that stance from the start had been "This is a new game. If you want it, you need to pay for it again," it still would have gotten some backlash, considering buyers were told they’d get future updates for free. But I feel the backlash would have been less.
It is mostly the same game though. Nothing has been really redesigned enough to call it a new game compared to an update. It's still 95% the same art assets. It's slightly more simplified than the itch.io version mechanically aswell (Which is fine).
Personally I prefer the itch.io version. The steam version has a lot of things removed that I personally liked about the itch.io version. Minus the custom gamemode it hasn't really "added" anymore to the game. The quality of life stuff is nice though.
You seem upset. My point still stands though? Regardless to how invested you want to be. The developer made it out he REALLY wanted to give away the steam keys for free. If he claimed that the steam version from the start was enough of an improvement that it warrants a re-purchase than that's fine.
If he did want to give it out for free but couldn't due to steam issues. Then nothing was stopping him from simply updating the itch.io version tot he latest version. I'm not quite sure where you're failing to realize the contradiction the developer is having with his statements.
I'll repeat once again for you. He claimed he wants to give for free. He continued to remove any future updates for the itch.io version and not give it for free on itch.io. You can't claim you want to give it for free and than...not give it for free. Yes he can't do it on steam but he can do it on itch.io.
it's still the same guy my guy. I know you likely made it again byc scratch which is a lot of work. You can't claim it's completely new though when it's not. You've reused literally all the same art assets. The game is still 95% the same minus the additions. The additions would have been an update. You can convince yourself it's a remake/reboot as much as you want. It's an update that you remade.
I'm a 3d artist. If someone wanted to pay me £100 for a 3D model but I redid it 3 times. I'm not going to charge them £300. I'm going to charge them for the final product. You can fool who you want but as a developer the steam release is an update.
Yeah pretty much. What makes no sense to me is claiming he would give a free steam key but can't. If that was the case. Why not just update the itch.io version. It's contradictory. Makes no sense other than he wants people to buy it twice. There isn't really any reason he can't just update it here. You just upload the game files to be able to be downloaded. The only "valid" reason is he thinks people will spread the game around for free? But they could do that with the original version aswell.
I re-purchased the game on steam. I'm pretty disappointing with a lot of the unnecessary changed. However I do find it odd that if nacho (The developer) REALLY did want to give steam version of the game away for free but couldn't due to steam limiting keys.
Why didn't he just update the itch.io version to be the latest version that we see on steam? That way everyone is happy... no? Like am I crazy with that suggestion? That feels like the most reasonable thing to do.
(He wouldn't have had to tell everyone he'll refund them then? Then cause himself even more mess when he realized he couldn't refund people)
Instead the itch.io version will no longer get updates and the only way to get the newer version of the game is to re-purchase it. Yes it's $3 but I'm just confused on the front nacho is putting on to say he wanted to give the newest version of the game away for free. When if that was the case he'd just give it free on itch? Which is exactly what the buckshot roulette developer did. He didn't give a steam key away for free but he gave everyone still future updates on itch.io to show he supports and appreciates his original fanbase.
I don't know. If he believes his steam release has enough to warrant a re-purchase than that's fine. I'm not here to debate that. However, why doesn't he just say that? When that feels like it's clearly the case with him turning a blind eye to simply uploading the new game on itch for players to play?
you still are avoiding the important point of. Why didn't he simply release the steam version on itch.io. nacho comes off as disingenuous simply because he claims he wanted to give the steam release to all itch.io players for free but couldn't due to limited keys. If that's true and he does want to give the game from. Why not just upload it to itch for itch players. He's contradicting himself. If he wants that extra $3 just say "I think the steam release has enough to warrant another $3". Like...be honest with the fans. Even more so the itch.io fans.
Literally buckshot roulette gave itch.io a free update on steam release. This scenario is no different.
There's no "understanding policies" when a very clear and easy solution is to either tell everyone outright "Ok I lied. I don't want to give the game out for free and was cockblocked by steam. I just think it has enough to warrant a re-purchase". Again him being blocked by steam simply makes no sense when the alternative solution is to simply update the itch.io version to what we see on steam.
Well he realized he couldnt give a refund if it'd been longer than 90 days. Still entirely his lack of research. Hes already flopped on some promises so hes kind of dug himself a deeper hole from simply not quickly investigation if itch had a refund period. I feel bad but equally man should really stop speaking without checking things out first. Promised steam keys into a promised refund without checking if either were possible.
Why not just release the steam version on itch.io for itch.io users to download. People keep saying "but its only $3". That applies both ways. If its only $3 why is the developer simply not updating the itch version. Itch people were promised free updates if they buy the game yet are no longer receiving these free upates? It doesnt make much sense to me. This whole situation wouldnt be an issue if the update to the game was given to itch users aswell as released on steam.
no one has claimed an "incredible expense" though. That's simply been blown out of proportion by people who want to defend the practice of being forced to repurchase the game. It's not about the expense. The game was supposed to have free updates. The itch.io was left with no future updeated while a new updated version is now on steam. If the developer truly cared about his original developers and is only claiming he can't give the game for free on steam due to keys. Why not simply release the updated game for itch.io customers???? That's where all of this falls apart. Even buckshot roulette when releasing on steam still gave itch.io free updates of the game.
If he had given itch.io buyers the free update on itch then this would all make perfect sense. However he didn't. That's where this falls apart.
Hey man complaints is what makes a change. To just sit down and take it means any developer will have the same mindset. That's like saying "Never complain about league of legends, Apex legends, Counterstrike, etc..." because they're all free games. So any "complaints" are invalid because people are spending time complaining about a free game. It's just a strange mindset to have. The only validation is "bUt it'S onLy $3.". Whenever someone presents any valid reasoning to the issue it comes down to the money. Even though that's not the problem when complaining about free games are also valid.
So your defense is that you're claiming they're entirely different games? When both the games are 90% the same with the exception of the custom game mode? That's....a bit of a stretch don't you think. You clearly don't want to release the steam version on itch.io because you want people to re-purchase the game and recoup the efforts you put into "remaking" the game. I don't know man. Just sounds like you're being greedy. Like...you have to release from the customer perspective why this seems like a scummy move.
But why isn't he just updating the new version on itch.io for people? That way everyone happy. People who have purchased the game would still be able to get the new version if the itch.io version was updated. I get not being able to give a steam key but there's no reason not being able to simply replace the itch.i files with the new ones of the game.....I feel its because the developer had to remake the entire thing and wants compensation for remaking it. Which i'd understand if the steam version was a huge step up from the original. However its kind of a watered down version. With the exception of the custom mode. So it just doesn't make a lick of sense why he wouldn't just make everyone happy by releasing it on ithc.io for people to download???
It's more people want the game to still be updated on itch. I twas promised future updates would be given free for people who bought the game. Yet Nacho "remade" the game (When in reality it is basically the same game. I suspect he made it from the ground up but it is still the same game) and won't give original supporters the updated version of the game on itch.io. Where they originally purchased it and where they were told they'd receive future updates for free. I suspect people wouldn't be complaining as much if they were still receiving what they were essentially promised from their purchase of the game. I feel that's a perfectly reasonable expectation.
I would like to start this by saying that if the developer literally cannot give out enough free keys then it is a bad situation for him and the players. With that said however. I've been a developer on plenty of itch.io and steam products. You can usually get an indefinite amount of steam keys as long as you communicate with steam how many keys you need and for what purpose. So as long as nacho communicates with steam he had so many sales on itch.io. He should have been able to send keys out for each user. HOWEVER maybe steam decline him. I don't know the full situation. It just seems from what nacho has posted that he seemed to have put the minimum effort into communicating with steam.
No one is complaining they have to spend $3. They're complaining they have to re-buy the game in the first place. Which is perfectly understandable. Even more so when the developer had been quoted in the past saying he would give a free steam key.
On top of that he's removed being able to get the game on itch.io. ON TOP of that the game doesn't work on mac. ON TOP OF THAT the developer claimed free updates for itch.io users indefinitely. To then release a new version of the game on steam and discontinue the itch.io version.
There is a lot of reasons to be upset with the decisions the developer has made. The fact people keep going "wah wah its only $3 why are you'all crying" is them clearly not understanding why people are upset. It's not about the price. Its about the broken promises and other things i stated.
The issue is. people bought the game here expecting free updates until the game no longer gets updating. Presumably the steam version will now get updates leaving anyone who purchased the game on itch.io in the dust with no new features while features will be added on steam. So it's less about people expecting it free on steam and more that they expect free updates on here when they know steam will get them. Even buckshot roulette still updated the itch.io version of the game AND the steam version.
It's a slap in the face for people who supported the game early on. You support the game to be told "ok no more update guys. You'll have to buy it a second time. My hands are tied!".
So I think it's perfectly understandable why people are upset about not getting steam version because they know that version will now be the only one getting updates and they no longer will get updates on itch.
Edit: I will say i do appreciate the discount. Even more so that you pointed out it was for mostly people who already had the game. I don't know if you sent emails out to the itch.io owners to tell them the game was released and is on offer. Regardless it is a nice gesture. I am just pointing out why people are upset. ,
It's not "really" another game let's be real. It's likely been made from the ground up but that's not different then any other developer. Lots of games have "overhauls" where it's remade from the ground up.
If you can't do it due to steam that's fine. However I find that odd. As a developer myself companies i've worked for have given out infinite keys. They usually just have to request more from steam.
