I think they mean the extra lives? Personally, I think the final game should just have an option to play with/without unlimited lives.
Making lives act like collectibles sounds interesting, I guess if you wanted to you could track how many lives were found in each level so completionists get a sense of accomplishment for finding them all

Could I suggest some sort of confirmation for quitting back to the title? I've accidentally ended my game twice now because the quit to title button is closer to my cursor than the back button when I'm examining the opponent, and my brain thinks the X means "close window and return to game" without stopping to read the mouseover text for some reason
One time, a match I had with a friend was interrupted because their internet cut out, and we had to start over because that wasn't something the resync option could fix. I mean, that's normal for most games, but since this one is turn-based it'd be nice if it were possible to salvage that by saving the replay data and using that to start a match at the point we left off at. I don't know whether or not it would be difficult to implement, though.
I've played a few matches with my friend in 0.1.5 that all ended in connection issues. While I do see that a solution for that was added recently, it did give me an idea: Would it be at all possible to allow unfinished matches with another person to be continued from saved replay data? Because the game is turn-based, that gives it a unique opportunity to allow both players to stop a match and come back to it later, like with a chess game, and I think it'd be a shame to not take advantage of that. I know replays already work this way in singleplayer, but I'd love to be able to continue from replays against a friend too. Maybe it could be exclusively for private matches, since I could imagine it being used to troll people by putting them in a losing battle.
My other suggestion would be to allow control over the HP, for short matches or if you wanted to do some long epic fight, which would go well with the ability to save a fight with a friend and continue it later.
