The Hook: "You aren’t the hero; you are a system error." DarknessEcho is an uncomfortable meta-horror experience where you play as a Digital Symbiote — a fragment of experimental software trapped inside a child's amulet. You are a parasite, and your host, a boy named Grayson, is unaware of your existence.
Visual Style: We are aiming for a jarring friction between a clinical, administrative OS environment (SIGNAL.HOST) and a 1-bit, hand-drawn 2.5D world seen through Grayson's eyes (inspired by Flipnote Studio and the Nintendo DS era). Think World of Horror meets OneShot.
Current Progress (Evidence of Effort):
- Complete GDD: High-level design, narrative arc (3 chapters), and mechanics are fully documented.
- Functional Prototype: A working technical build in LÖVE2D featuring a manual command-line terminal, meta-persistence (writing logs to the user's actual directory), and dynamic loading systems.
- Audio: Dedicated sound designer on board. We already have a base for "clinical/mechanical" UI sounds.
- Technical Path: Currently prototyping in Lua, with a planned migration to LÖVE2D (Lua) for the final release to maximize hardware optimization and OS manipulation.
Who we are looking for:
- 2D Artist: Someone comfortable with 1-bit palettes, dithering, and the "line-boil" effect. You'll be creating character billboards and environmental assets for the 2.5D world.
- Technical Co-lead / Programmer (Lua): If you are interested in low-level optimization, memory manipulation, and building "fake" OS environments within a framework like LÖVE2D.
- 3D Artist: Someone comfortable with DS-styled Low-Poly. You'll be creating environment for 2.5D world
Payment: This is currently a hobby/rev-share passion project. I am creative director/narrative designer looking for like-minded people who miss the "Golden Age" of indie games (2008-2015) and want to create something technically unique.
