NIB 1.0.1 is now available as a stable maintenance update. It fixes 40 confirmed issues across project safety, Undo/Redo and MCP edits, animation and physics, WebGL2/WebGPU rendering, and HTML/ZIP export. Project and asset formats are unchanged.

The itch.io download now contains NIB-1.0.1.zip. I downloaded it again and verified that its SHA-256 matches the official GitHub release.

Please save and back up your projects, extract the new version separately, and check save/reopen and an exported game. The trailer in the original post was recorded in 1.0.0. If you try 1.0.1, a small reproducible project and your browser/rendering backend are especially helpful for bug reports.

Hi everyone! I'm Murad, the creator of NIB, a visual 2D and 3D game editor I've been building over the past several months. The first stable release, NIB 1.0.0, is now available, and I'd like to introduce it to developers looking for a small engine they can explore through a visible editor and JavaScript.

Relay Foundry — one of the playable starter games included in the stable release.

What working in NIB looks like

  1. Build a scene: organize entities and components in the Hierarchy, place models or sprites, and edit properties in the Inspector.
  2. Add gameplay: use the supplied movement controllers and write JavaScript rules with parameters exposed in the editor.
  3. Give it motion and atmosphere: work with character rigs, animation clips and state graphs, layered effects, terrain, lighting, spatial sound, and game UI.
  4. Test: enter Play mode, inspect errors in the Console, and measure the scene with the Profiler.
  5. Share: export a Single HTML game or a Web Project ZIP. An optional packager can wrap a Single HTML export as a portable Windows x64 application.

Some tools worth trying

  • 2D and 3D in one editor: sprites and frame animation, GLB/glTF models, materials, cameras, lights, and native WebGL2/WebGPU rendering.
  • World building: terrain sculpting, layered surface painting, foliage, and prop scattering.
  • Characters: skeleton and skin-weight editing, animation keyframes, blending, state graphs, and explicit retargeting maps.
  • Effects: reusable particle, geometry, trail, light, and audio layers that can be triggered by scripts or animation events.
  • Physics and navigation: built-in 2D physics, bundled Rapier 3D, and baked grid navigation.
  • UI and sound: editable menus and HUDs, action-based input, spatial audio, ambient zones, and mixer buses.

The Character editor — a closer look at the tools behind the games.

Start with a game, or an empty scene

The release includes ten playable starter games, six rendering/animation showcases, and empty 2D/3D scenes. Examples include the Relay Foundry FPS, Port Azure racing game, Signal Harbor campaign, Courier's Wake platformer, and Tinker Yard physics workshop. You can inspect their scenes and scripts, change something, and export your own variation.

Optional local MCP workflow

NIB also ships a local MCP server with 62 tools for inspecting projects, editing scenes and scripts, working with assets and effects, running Play tests, capturing screenshots, and exporting. A compatible client is configured separately; an AI subscription is not bundled. The visual editor remains available throughout the workflow.

Free to make and publish games

NIB is free for personal, educational, and commercial games under its proprietary license, with no mandatory subscription or royalties. Your original game code and assets remain yours. Preserve the required runtime and third-party notices when distributing a game.

The compiled editor runs locally with Node.js 22.12 or newer and a desktop Chromium browser. Extract NIB-1.0.0.zip, run start.bat on Windows or sh start.sh on macOS/Linux, and follow the included getting-started guide. Players of hosted web exports do not need NIB or Node.js.

I'd love to hear what you'd try first: adapting a starter game, building a scene from scratch, character animation, effects, or the MCP workflow. If you try NIB, tell me what felt clear and where you got stuck — that feedback will help guide the next improvements.

Hi everyone! I'm Murad, the creator of NIB. After several months of development, the first stable release, NIB 1.0.0, is now available on itch.io.

NIB is a visual editor and game engine for building 2D and 3D games. Assemble a scene, give it rules with JavaScript, test it in Play, and export a game people can run in their browser.

  • Scene editing, sprites, PBR materials, terrain, physics and game UI.
  • Built-in gameplay controllers and editable JavaScript scripts.
  • Character rigs, animation clips and state graphs, plus layered visual effects and spatial audio.
  • 10 complete starter games and 6 rendering/animation showcases.
  • 62 local MCP tools for an optional workflow with a separately configured compatible client.
  • Single HTML and Web Project ZIP exports.

Free for personal, educational and commercial games, with no royalties or mandatory subscription. The engine/editor is proprietary under the NIB license; your original game code and assets remain yours.

I'd love feedback from developers trying a new engine. Pick a starter game, change a character, material or gameplay rule, then export it. What felt clear? What was confusing? Did anything break?
