Hi GrimDark! First off, I just want to say how much I appreciate the work you’re doing on Masters of Raana. It’s one of the most ambitious Twine/SugarCube projects I’ve ever seen, and the depth of worldbuilding and mechanics really shows the amount of care you put into it.

I wanted to share a few friendly accessibility suggestions, coming from the perspective of players who rely on screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, etc.). Twine can be very accessible, but some design patterns need small tweaks to work well with assistive tech. None of these are urgent — just things that could help more players enjoy the game smoothly.

Here are some ideas that could make MoR much more screen-reader-friendly:

🌟 Small but high-impact fixes

• Use real <button> elements for choices

Some interactable elements in MoR are spans/anchors styled as buttons. Screen readers don’t recognize them as clickable.

SugarCube already supports <button>, and switching to those makes everything keyboard and SR friendly automatically.

• Add ARIA landmarks

Just wrapping key areas like this helps a lot:

•

<main role="main"> for the passage text

•

<nav role="navigation"> for menus

•

<aside> for the stats panel

This lets screen reader users jump around easily.

• Make sure elements can be tabbed/focused

A lot of games hide focus outlines or use non-focusable elements.

Just allowing normal focus and keeping a visible outline makes navigation smoother.

• Announce new passages

When Twine swaps passages, screen readers don’t automatically know a change happened.

Adding a small aria-live="polite" div that updates with the passage name would fix that nicely.

🌟 Larger QoL improvements

• A simple “Access Mode” toggle

A mode that:

•

turns off animations

•

disables hover-to-see tooltips

•

linearizes the UI

•

reveals info that’s normally hidden

•

uses only text menus

This would make MoR much easier for blind/low-vision players.

• Text-based map option

The visual map is cool, but a text version like:

North Market — shops, guilds

Industrial Ring — crafting, machinery

Old City — nobles, temples

Underways — criminal, shady work

would be super helpful.

• Click-to-expand descriptions instead of hover

Perks, traits, items, clothing, and NPCs often use hover boxes.

Replacing these with button-based collapsible sections works great in screen readers.

• Stat changes & dice rolls announced

If stats or dice results also update an aria-live region (“Agility increased to 7”), blind players get immediate feedback just like sighted players.

💛 Final note

Not expecting all or even most of this — MoR is a huge project already, and you’re doing fantastic work. These are just suggestions that could widen the game’s audience and make it more enjoyable for players who rely on assistive tech.

Thanks again for creating such a rich, fascinating world.

If you ever decide to explore accessibility improvements and want feedback/testing, I’d be happy to help

Hey there, so I downloaded the game.
I play it using the self voicing mode built in ren'py, enabled by pressing V.
it reads out everything on the screen.
The game starts out fine, main menu reads, not after that though.
I'm guessing there are open world segments, since after it reads Monday, no choices read after that.
could this be looked into? and thanks for making such a nice game! :)

thank you my friend, is this the only way to reach you? or is there a discord server? :)

I can certainly understand, thank you for all the effort you're making, I can't wait to see what you come up with, I'll probably go download your previous game to try it out :)

By the way, don't no if you know about arcade spirits and the games from the same team, they are really good examples when it comes to accessibility.
don't know if checking them out might help with some issues you're facing with your game.
but here's the link, https://store.steampowered.com/app/910630/Arcade_Spirits/

I'm just gonna be glad to play it, any imprefections can be delt with I'm sure. :)

thank you so much for your response and effort, take all the time you need, no worries there, I and many others don't mind waiting if it means we get to play a wonderful game such as yours.
keep up the excellent work. :)

Hello there and good day.
I discovered your game today on itch, and the description pulled me in, I downloaded it.
Thing is, I'm visually impaired, so do to that, I'm using the self voicing mode built in ren'py, enabled by pressing V.
It reads everything on the screen, as soon as the game starts, the disclaimer doesn't read, but with trial and error, I managed to pass that point, main menu reads just fine, options menu too.
but when starting the game, customizing my MC doesn't read well.
It doesn't read the options at all, but the results are read all lumped in one line.
would there be any interest in looking into this? and thank you.

here's what one of the nice devs who works on an accessible vn, called secret island had to say when it came to making things accessible with self voicing in his game.

The main issue I had to fix were buttons and other stuff that were made using an image with text in it. Self-voicing tries its best to read stuff, so if I use pictures it can't do anything about it. So, anytime I use a picture I can add the 'alt' value to tell self-voicing how exactly I want it to be read.

    imagemap:

        ground "gui/main_menu.png"

        hover "gui/main_menu_hover.png"

        hotspot (57, 33, 274, 129) action Start() alt "Start"

It also helps when you don't want something to be read. For example, my game has a day counter on the top right. But it was being read for each dialogue being show on screen. So, I added alt "" to force it to not be read.

text "Day [day]" xalign 1.0 yalign 0 color "FFFFFF" outlines [(2, "#000000")] font "fonts/PentagramsSalemica-B978.ttf" alt ""

The same goes for narration. If I want a dialogue to only play during self-voicing I use alt like it is an character. For example, to describe things on the screen. Something that is being show on a picture, but the characters aren't talking about it. Like their clothes, or something happening on the background.

here are some links that hopefully might help in your research about self voicing.

I do have to admit, I've always been interested in this game, though playing it with self voicing is a bit of a pain, thank you for making this version, I'll test it out right now and hopefully it works better, thank you for all your hard work.

hello there, so I bought the game on
here, do I have to repurchas it on steam if I want to play it on there? or do I get a steam key for my itch purchase or something?

hello there, I just saw that you're thinking of making this game into aVN, would it be possible then to implement accessibility into it? I'd love to get the chance to play it honestly. :)

is this game playable with ren'py's SelfVoicing mode?

hello hello there, I hope this day finds you well, any update on the selfVoicing issue with ren'py?

This game is truly epic, it delivers on everything it promises and more! congratulations to the dev for making such an incredible game, here's to more updates!

Thank you for such a wonderful game.
I hope you can figure out a selution, maybe checking the UI first? like making the hp and stuff not read after every press of enter and before the dialog? then seeing what comes next? :)

Hello there, I just downloaded the demo to try the game out, it looks interesting so far, I enabled the selfVoicing mode to be able to play, it's a bit confusing though.
So I can navigate dialog just fine, when it comes to combat? there where it gets complicated, I randomly passed through the first two battles, but after that it keeps reading my health and mana and my partner's health and mana each time I press enter then it reads the dialog.
if this game could become more accessible for screen reader users such as myself, I'd totally appreciate it. I'd love to play this game fully.
thank you for all your hard work. :)

Hello there, I tried the demo, I'm using a screen reader by the way, and since it's made in  Ren'py? I figured if I just turn on the selfVoicing mode, I'd be able to play it, but when I do? none of the options read, I pressed on one randomly, it started the game, I was able to advance through the dialog just fine, but when it came time to actually start playing? it just doesn't read anything, any way to fix that? and thank you for all your hard work.

Hello there, I've downloaded the game, got the cheat version, because the game does sound quite promising, but when I ran the game? there were a lot of unlabeled buttons and sections.
I'm using a screen reader by the way to play the game, any chance of an accessibility fix? since I'm quite liking what I read so far and would love
to enjoy the game to it's fullest, and thank you for all your hard work. :)

wow, I downloaded the demo. and it's perfect! I love it, and I admire all the work you put into the game. totally gonna be buying it on steam!
thank you for such wonderful game. :)

Hello there, this game really sounds very interesting.
and I'd love to play it. I do have a question before I buy it though, would it happen to have accessibility? since I use a screen reader, so these kinds of games are perfect.
and thanks for all your hard work, keep it up. :)

Hello there, does the dashingdon version has autosaves? like if I close the browser, does it continue where I left off? or do I have to manually save each time? and thanks for all your hard work! :)

I love it, and I would totally support you financially if I could to be able to get access to all the other goodies. :)

Hello there, I love the new update with accessibility fixes. thank you for all your hard work. Is there a way to support you other than patreon though? it seems like it's blocked where I live, I live in Egypt. and thank you.

Thank you for your quick reply. I really hope you find a solution.
I'll keep playing the twine version in the time being.
Thanks for all your hard work. :)

Hello there.
When I used to play this game it was the twine version. it was pretty accessible with screen readers,.
Now though, when I tried downloading the latest version and launching the game? nothing reads at all. I'm guessing it's cause it was made with unity.
would there be away to make it as accessible with screen readers as before?
I really enjoyed what I've played before and would love to play more.
and thank you :)

oh man. I would've love to play it :)

Hello there. I'd love to play this game. but I'm using what's called a screen reader to read what's on the screen. I don't want to download 2gb to find it not accessible. but the story seems pretty interesting so far.

I'll try and see what I can find. thank you :)

the program I use is called NVDA it's a free screen reader. the problem is that I know nothing about programming and the like.

Hello there. I tried downloading this game. It really sounded very promising. But as soon as I downloaded it? I couldn't play it. Because I'm using a screen reader and it doesn't read anything when it comes to the game. I'd really love to play it though. :)
