Figured it out! When you're loading the game, you gotta select which player you want to play as and click "join". If you just close the "join game" window without joining the game, you won't be able to do anything.

Ah, it's compact in a physical sense - the same prompts are printed on fewer cards, so you end up with a slightly less pretty, but smaller and more convenient deck (and easier to print, since the cards are in a more standard format, and more services can easily print them for you).
I didn't account for the size of the files =)
I would just say that it's one ability. This game is very narrative focused, the rules are loosey goosey, not crunchy and precise. Whatever makes the most sense for the story, whatever feels right, is usually the right thing to do.
The only concern when coming up with abilities is making sure that they don't get so overpowered that the game becomes boring (and you have trouble thinking up challenges that would be interesting and not too easy for your character to overcome). As long as an ability isn't absurdly overpowered, it's all good.
