I'm really happy to see that the rats were interesting enough and people have actually seen my last "rat" too! And yes, I'm definitely taking some notes from this for future reference when putting sounds into my games hahah

There were 3 total screens I had to make for this, each took me about 50 lines of code, and the game code itself is basically just show screen hide screen return. I think I would like to implement these mechanics into a bigger visual novel some day, and that is why I'm trying to learn as much about renpy as I can. I want to make a visual novel with various minigames in it. Gamejams are the perfect place for me to experiment :)
After this, I am planning to learn other engines regardless, but I do think I will keep returning to renpy since I don't exactly think I need all the extra stuff some of the other engines offer, and so they can actually slow down my visual novel projects instead of being helpful :/
Thanks for being so encouraging! I've encountered some negativity about my use of renpy since starting this hobby
I don't see why not? It was really easy for me to make. I keep seeing people say that I shouldn't have used renpy for this, but I was a part of making a similar game using unity last december, and honestly I think both of them work equally well, only difference is that I wouldn't have been able to make the unity game alone in such a short time :/
Edit: to be clear I'm genuinely curious why people are saying this to me. It doesn't come across as valid criticism for my game and I'm just a beginner. It's confusing :( it's not that I'm intending to only ever use renpy, but I wanted to get to know it thoroughly before moving on to learning different engines. I can't really learn to use everything it has to offer if I don't, well, do all the things it can do, even if some other engine would do it better
Oh you're right! A chihuahua would've been perfect for this. If I would continue making this, I'd definitely add one :D
As for the soundtrack, yes, that probably would've been a good call... I actually wanted to get a different music for the shop, but I didn't end up finding anything I liked enough, and the ones I liked felt a bit too disruptive considering you'd be clicking between the shop and the main scene a lot
Aw, it seems the audio has been really hit or miss for a lot of people.
And well, since you're asking, my original plan was for there to be timed "job assignments" and you'd need to click on a rat based on its stats and suitability for the job. But considering this is my first time making a game like this, and I joined the jam late (evening before deadline), I knew I had to make a lot of cuts from what I had originally wanted to make. I'm very new to this and still learning :)
My project this year has been to see all the kinds of things I can make using renpy creatively. I know it's not ideal, but I think it turned out pretty good? Renpy is a really cool engine and it can do a lot of things, plus it's very simple and easy to use even for people who are new to game development. I haven't had anything happen while rolling the mouse wheel, I will definitely look into what that's about and ask others about it too. Thanks for letting me know and trying the game! :)
The different client types were great, I really liked how it wasn't always super clear what exactly the proposal was, like the numbers would be written in a funny way or the proposal itself would be worded in a questionable way. I would've liked to see even more different cryptic proposals! Also, I got really spooked by the jumpscares :D
Adorable! I really liked playing this, though unfortunately I'm not very good at platformers, so it took me several tries to even get to the clouds, and when I reached space I kept missing so much cheese because it all just flashed by. Also, at the start I had to try several keys before I figured out which one would make something happen hahah, but after that everything went smoothly, the rat is really comfortable to control and you can easily play several rounds of this, it doesn't get boring
I really wanted to make more items for the shop, but I joined this jam late and I definitely also overestimated how fast I would be able to make this, now those abandoned shop item drafts will be stuck in my "work in progress" folder forever hahah
I saw your game earlier and I decided I'd definitely play it today, really happy to see another rat game in this jam! :D
Yeah unfortunately I didn't have time to make the stats actually meaningful, so they ended up being more of a flavor text, I figured at least they're kinda funny. I left them there because I really didn't have any time to change them, I joined the jam the evening before the deadline, and I was spending most of my time learning how to make a clicker game to begin with :(
The jobs too, I had an idea for clicking on a rat for a specific type of job (the stats would've been important here) etc. But it's no surprise that I didn't have the time and skill for everything. I did my best, and I feel like I've learned a lot from making this :)
That is otherwise a great suggestion, but I really originally intended for the stats to actually have a function in the game. Originally I wanted to put items into the shop that would boost the stats etc. So this was more of a time problem, not exactly an active design decision :(
I've only ever contributed to one game which made use of any kind of stats, so it turned out I wasn't skilled enough to come up with a functioning stats system so fast on my own hahah... though the stats do have small effect on the numbers of money the rats produce, bigger numbers in stats = chance for more money
Thanks for playing and thanks for feedback, it really helps :)
The game ends if you run out of money or cheese. The stats on the rats aren't all that important really, but you can get an idea on how each of them "perform" if you follow the numbers of money they make each click :)
Thankyou so much for the feedback! Next time I will definitely take into account these things!
I really liked the idea of this game, so much so in fact that I'm a bit sad that the game is so short (or it's a skill issue on my part?)... after a few turns, the cards suddenly get way too expensive :(
... though I guess that makes sense, if you are supposed to be a warlock with a demanding and unfair patron :D
