Yeahh.... I wanted to add gameplay to the game lmao but i had to finish the story in time and really didnt do much for the game until like sunday lol, so there's exactly 1 gameplay segment, being the first half of the tutorial. I was going to start the game off with the final boss fight, where you have to manage your health and ammo and things like that, but uh... yeah I really should tone down my projects when they become too ambitious, rather than just cutting out the gameplay and the climax next time lmao.

I love this game. I finally got it to work on my computer and have been slowly chipping away at this game for while, gradually getting used to the controls and... idk maybe i have a thing for rage games, but I thought this game was very fun.

The difficulty is a bit high right at the beginning, but past the steep learning curve, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience playing the game. Gradually learning things like how to double jump as high as possible, how far you can draw out the coyote time before the initial jump, and other minor details really make the skill ceiling on this game higher than I really expected going in.

The little false path gag was a little confusing and frustrating at first, since that seemed the only way forward lol, but it's really grown on me, and I've come to really  like the way that it basically clarifies, "no, that tree was not just for decoration." While it was initially irritating, the short length of the game really enhances the experience, allowing for all kinds of experimentation, trial and error, and allowing platforming challenges to be introduced in unique ways, like that tree, without really wasting that much of the player's time lol

I DID IT!

And the art is absolute fantastic btw. I love this style.

Sorry I should've clarified in the description. I don't go to UNC Chapel Hill. I'm actually in UNC Charlotte so I'm ineligible for prizes lol i just did this for fun

This is a very nice game. I really like the music and art, and the chimeramaker6.66 menu is awesome. The only thing is, there seems to be some kind of glitch when I click the Create button in the chimeramaker6.66 menu. It just keeps adding the stats of my current selection in the Project menu every time I click the Create button, and only resets back to normal when I click the Project button. I don't know if you've caught this glitch already, but I'd just like to make sure you know about it.

But the main gameplay is very fun. I played this game for like an hour and had a blast! Great game!

Thanks! While I did submit a week before the deadline at first, that was when I just finished Chapter 0. After that, I just kept updating the game until the deadline. Lol there would have been no way for me to finish the whole game in under a week.

Thanks! I made sure to follow the jam theme as closely as I could, with thematic aberration, chromatic aberration, etc. Cube sweep!

And yeah, the fixed distance cube mechanic would probably be better suited for more of a puzzle game, and I even got a few ideas on how to add more puzzle segments during development, but I had to trim the game down to its bare parts before even considering finishing by the end of the jam lmao

cube frens?

I guess my game doesnt really need ratings, as the 54th most rated game in the jam, but i hope the nice little story of a friendly adventure brightens your day until you reach chapter 3.

i really gotta start rating more of other peoples games soon...

Thank you very much! My secret to finishing this game on time was that my university happened to have spring break that exact week during the middle of the jam, so I took that week off to utterly destroy my circadian rhythm working on this lmao.

And thanks for the complements on the story! I just feel like I could've done better, especially with one segment halfway through chapter 2 where i realized I had limited time to work on this game, so I just crammed all the exposition and explanations of absolutely everything into one rather lengthy scene. lol i requested that the judges evanmmo and duccw play cube friends on stream, and that exact section was what turned them against the game, so lets just say I'm definitely not making it into the top ten lmao

Thank you very much! I probably spent far more time bug fixing the game than doing anything else, even though I spent what probably amounted to a couple days on all the music lmao, so I'm glad my polishing efforts are appreciated, as well as that music that I may have spent more time than necessary on.

And as for the coins, I was considering adding a cosmetic shop where you could get different visual variations of the cube friends, but I basically ran out of time while making the boss fight. I even had to trim the fight down to its basic elements and rush an ending to get at least the story done in time for the end of the jam. At the moment, all getting the coins does is it changes the title screen background.

Thanks! I spent quite a while fine tuning the controls to get them just right. It was surprisingly hard to set up how to handle collisions and the mouse controls lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks! I tried to make this as complete of an adventure as I could

Thanks! I wasn't sure about whether or not I'd have time for all the code for the mouse controls to work properly, but then I realized accessibility is probably more important for my game than final boss polish lol

Thanks! And I'll try playing on another computer later to see if I can get it to work somewhere else

Thanks! I tried my best, and happened to be on break for part of the jam so I got to spend quite a lot of time on this game lol

As for the intro music, the engine is called Godot so i just had to do it lmao. I'm glad somebody noticed and liked it.

Thanks! I tried to make the controls as easy to use as I could, especially for the later levels lol

OH MY STERNUM

I keep getting this error when I try to open the game

Thanks! With the jam being so long I thought I might as well make a big story (at the cost of my sleep and sanity lmao), even if the final boss and ending were a little rushed lol. My main motivation for doing the whole thing was to get to the end where you could satisfyingly swipe across the keyboard against the final boss, so I'm glad you liked that part too :D

A TIP FOR ANYBODY PLAYING: DO NOT TRY TO MOVE DOWN AND FORWARDS AT THE SAME TIME.

Why, you may ask? Well, down is 'ctrl' and forward is 'W'
And we all know what happens with ctrl+W

But overall I really like the game. It's big, spooky, mysterious and mechanics like the grapple and hull repair minigames are quite fun. Plus, SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE.

KILL THE MOON

I love the little hull repair minigames. And the overall atmosphere of the game. The only thing I wish were different would be when reading the logs. I kept running out of oxygen skimming through XD.

Ah wait looks like I could've just paused or moved at any time while reading the logs lmao. Guess it was a skill issue the whole time...

Lmao. The theme is aberration, after all.
And thanks!

Cube

Thanks! I'm so used to composing in 4/4 that the 7/8 time signature really stood out to me at first, but after a while I realized I didn't make it noticeable enough on its own. Unfortunately, I didn't really have time to go back for that lol

(drops rat to the ground)

Yeah, lol I've been trying to add stuff about the mouse controls to try and catch the attention of early players  from before I added the feature but so far i haven't done such a great job lmao

oh lmao oof i guess i still don't have enough pointing to the new mouse controls. I'm going to put a screenshot later specifically for that then lol

Thanks! And I basically made the music first and the game second lol

Thanks! And yeah, near the end, the mouse controls are usually better than the keyboard ones unless you have a specific kind of keyboard and don't mind the noise lol.

Smitty Werbenjagermonsterjensen vs flying statue of liberty robot. This game is amazing lmao.

ok now ive added a ton of stuff to the page and description to make sure people know about the mouse controls even though the game only kind of mentions it in really small text in parentheses in the tutorial (because i didnt have time left to draw a cursor and parent it to that hand icon. i basically finished basic cycle of the final boss right before the deadline) lol

LMAO Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

(1 edit)

Actually, I've created mouse controls for people specifically with your issue. It took me a full day to implement without bugs because I can only get discrete mouse position data lol, and I guess I didn't really put much of it in the tutorial because of time constraints, but it's there.

Basically, to get them to jump with the mouse, you click down, and when the mouse passes the column with the cube in it, the cube jumps. So, you can click down and quickly swipe across the frame and if it detects that the mouse was on one side of the cubes on one frame and the other side of the cubes on the next, it makes sure all the cubes jump. There's a bit more to it than that but that's basically the gist of it and the rest should be rather intuitive.

Thanks! Yeah I really want to finish before the deadline but I'm not sure I really have the time lol. For now I'll try to finish up Chapter 3 and then get to the boss fight once all the mechanics are in place.

Well, Chapter 2 is out now!
