Ohh xD let me explain what actually happened, see, in the starter pack, among the initial equipment/ torches/food and such, you get an 'Ankh', which is an amulet that will take you to your Home when you die, thus giving you a second chance in exchange of XP. There are folks (like me) who drop it (cant be sold) so you don't have any help. But yea, can be fun to keep it too :))
Hello there! Just wanted to let you know a new patch has been uploaded. I know it's a bit of a downer, but read the devlog for this II-24 patch, I address the Targeting issue. After squeezing the code for fixings, it proved to be a hill I could not climb. When other fellow devs where consulted, we concluded that keeping things simpler was the safest thing to do. You can read the log, but basically I'm explaining it here real quick, when a ranged action is started, a simple menu will pop up, asking you to either choose ' c ' for the game to pick the closest target available, regardless of how the projectile has to fly to meet it (only needs to be visible); or choose a direction.
Hope that this does not deter you from enjoying my humble Variant. Now you can eat corpses and lock doors! I take some, I give some xD
Thank you lots for your input, made me bury my nose in the code and it was a good thing. Thanks again.

Hello again, good sir. That targetting bug has been in the radar for some time. I keep on working on it, and it's proving to be a scurry one. It's mentioned specifically in the machete_readme.txt. I can only, for now, offer you guys my apologies on it. Alternatively, although more tactical, the use of the octo-way is the only solid solution. Sorry again for the inconvenience, and hope it does not deter you from enjoying this Variant.
Hello again. Checking out all the messages from other users, there's a guy using Win11 who had to run the .exe as Admin, I don't know if that would help but worked for him. Then there's another Win11 user who instead of unzip and click on the .exe (as would be the normal) ,he double clicked on the .exe inside the .zip, as if he wanted to execute w/o unzipping; then the system ,he told me, unzipped the folder and executed the game correctly by itself.
I'm trying to come up with as many ideas I can find. Anyways, later on the evening or tomorrow, a new update will be released which addresses a couple of code bugs I found. Maybe has nothing to do, maybe the bad code was thtrowing off your system.
Sorry for the incovenience.
Jose Machete.
Hello! Sounds like a tricky one to track down, since none of the features you are mentioning where altered in any way or form, at any time of the Variant development. Looks to me like there is an array problem that is making the game to behave in weird ways, but, here's where it gets the trickier part, not to everyone. All my testers reported back zero issues. How utterly strange. I will look into it. Thank you very much for the input, appreciated.
IMPORTANT note: 0.8F version is giving issues on start to some people on Windows 10.
Windows 11, Linux of Ubuntu and Debian flavors (both build and under Wine) are running the game with no problems.
I am going post a rollback release as soon as I can for people who have problems on win10.
As per right now, I am working on finding the root of the bug.
Thank you everybody for the reports and the inputs.
Hello! aw, dude that is so neat. See, the same works for me. Transitioning from Windows to Linux, still rely on compiling the binary for win .exe but perfectly run tested by Wine on both my laptops (Zorin and Mint). I actually want to, at some point, be able to get Linux to have its own executable but for the meanwhile, and being Wine so easy to use... Can focus my energy on keep on pouring hour upon hour into this Variant.
Now, to the point of your post, yes. I played A LOT of Vanilla in the past. Then I found Zangband, and fell enamored with it. Specially being a R. Zelazny fan. Now my Variant includes a HUGE influence from all the literary sources I'm packing in my brain, and it shows. The commands are resemblant but here some of them work their own way. 's' earch for secret doors and traps is important too. 'S' pike up (jam) doors is a good feature that will let you know everytime a creature kicks that one jammed door in. That work both ways, be careful.
But being a seasoned player on good ol' Vanilla gives you a headstart on Zang and their descendents, mine among them. You will get the features and the commands in no time. My Variant is made under my nerd(y) p.o.w. and there are tons of references to books and other games to discover, hidden in the descriptions xD
Feel free to comment, ask, or whatever you feel like about the Variant, I visit this page quite often. Also hang out around on masto/bsky.
Thank you lots for the neat comment and see ya in the Dungeon!
Delayed answer, my bad. That would be very much a nice thing. I do play a number of RLs under Wine, I'm bummed as to why it's giving me an error while running your Delve. Actually I do even play my own variant that way, since I'm quite new to linux and still don't know how to compile source to get it running natively on it . So in the meanwhile I still edit/write code in vs2022. Big kudos on your advances. See u on bsky.
Hello there. I'm appending a last minute comment to the 0.7F release's devlog.
I'm hereby stating that there is not going to be a major implementation of adapted tilesets, beyond bringing back the originals, as they are *sort of* available in this patch. The reason is a major conflict with the code, and I'm way more inclined to enjoy my time dedicated to keep the Variant growing in quality content and Lore, than struggling with the code for something I don't honestly support. As it is well know, I might be a stubborn die-hard ASCII art lover.
Apologies for the dropped graphical expectations. ASCII emotional grip is too strong :]
That being said, next release will be ready in the next days, with more monsters, Uniques, items and little adjustments in the search for the Z Variant of my dreams.
Thank you for reading this, for the patience, for playing this my beloved Variant. See ya!
