This is listed as being multi-session. I played this in a single long session (4.5 hours) because I like one shots and that's what works best for my group. I could easily see another group getting several sessions out of this. It was great - just as high quality as the other two scenarios (Night of the Hogmen/Blood Cotillion). I found this lower prep/easy to run than Blood Cotillion (but more than Hogmen where you need essentially no prep) as you really only need to read the opening scene and finale ahead of time.

The character playbooks were as amazing as the rest of the series, and the mutation system was great. The naming of the characters and assorted inventory that each character has is such a great hook and kicks off so many different tangents for the players... I've reused some of the characters in "continued stories in the same universe" as they're really too good to only use once.

As excited as I am about the full RPG coming out, these scripted one shots/campaign have been so great that I'd rather just keep playing a new one of these every few months... so keep up the great work!

Huge recommendation!

I played this last night with a bunch of friends and had a great time. It was a very different scenario from the first one (Night of the Hogmen) - I was able to play the 'Night' scenario with zero prep - I read it as the players were progressing. For this one you definitely want to read it ahead of time as this is a very open/sandbox style scenario where the players can talk/explore a ton of places in any order.

What I really liked:

  • the character sheets/playbooks are super evocative and great. The characters are all assassins so they aren't as varied as with the first scenario, but they're all excellent and the items/special abilities are incredible
  • the NPCs are all packed to the gills with awesome plot hooks. Vague one liners like 'this person's predilection for jam got them kicked out of boarding school' or 'the infamous owl affair' give you just enough to craft something memorable that fits with what is happening with your characters
  • the system is stripped down Forged In The Dark with just the right amount of rules for a one shot.

I'm hoping that you keep doing more of these scenarios - I don't need a full system, I just want more super well done one shots to run. I'm sure I'll buy teeth, but if you could crank these out one at a time and show off the world/system that way I'd love it.

Thanks for making this!

One suggestion I've got for others with small groups - I played with 2 players and so as the GM I played as one of the characters and killed them off as soon as possible. This helped highlight the tension and let me pick three items of luggage with large role playing potential to be left behind for the players to try and use. It was a real joy to see the players figure out something useful to do with a pickled octopus and a damaged brass trumpet :)

Also shouldn't the GM be called the Hogs Master vs Game Master?

I heard about this yesterday on the SU&SD podcast and printed it out the same day. Didn't have time to read the full rules or scenario before a few friends came over, so we just started with me quickly reviewing the rules, and reading the scenario as we played. It was super easy to run and get into and everyone had an awesome time. I love how short the whole package was and how I could read it as I ran it.

I've only played blades in the dark once (as GM) but I think that made it a bit easier to run. I'm super excited about the rest of the teeth system, but mostly to run more pre-prepared one shots like this. The pregen characters made it immediately evocative - from names to luggage to descriptions they really jumped off the page.

Eagerly planning running the 2nd one shot!
