Blood Engine is a point and click cosmic horror adventure game about a ship that needs blood. Made for the Brackeys Game Jam.

........................................................................................

WOW! Can't believe Blood Engine came 40th out of 2,300 entries in Brackeys Game Jam! Now that we're free to update our games again, this new version is now playable on mobile! (Don't even have to download it. Playable on mobile, in-browser, and on desktop).

I've also fixed all the bugs that were identified during the jam. I'd really like to expand on it after the jam; more branching narratives, more elaborate puzzles, etc. If you love/hate it please let me know! I'd really love to know:

  • does it play as you would expect for a game of this format?
  • is it let down by anything in particular?
  • is there anything you enjoyed in particular?
  • is this something you would be interested in playing?
  • and is this worth continuing? ^_^

Many thanks in advance!

Oh no. Sorry about the missing cutscene. Do you mind telling me what browser and OS you were using? The video should have come up for the Omega Ending, but I saw for one person using Firefox it didn't play. Think it's a quirk of HTML5 video.

This is what you should have got for OMEGA

Can confirm this is unique and very good. :) Not seen another game like it in the jam!

Wow. Bravo. I made it in the end. I love gim stories, and this could definitely be a theme for an 11 Bit game. That desperation and realism of This War Of Mine. The writing was great and I liked getting a feel for the place the protagonist lives from their interactions with the people in the other flats. I died many times trying to find my way. Wasn't sure where I was trying to get to. I read an earlier comment that gave me a clue so figured it out in the end. Very challenging. And very bold. Great work. Love seeing these kind of narratives and themes in games. Less of the glory and more of the grim reality of war.

Thank you ^_^ Loved your game too!

Wow! I really got into the story. And there's so much game here with so many mechanics that all add complexity to it (which is good). I particularly liked having to grab the plank and place it again while I was in mid-air ^_^ Couldn't get past the little spider after the big spider, but really enjoyed what I played so far. Very impressive!

Thank you! It was certainly a challenge!

Behind the scenes of the cinematic in Blood Engine. With more time, I may make cinematics for each of the "true" endings :)

Loved the characters' art! How on earth did you come up with so much story in just a week? Incredible. So well written and a compelling. Well done!

Wow. So atmospheric and surreal! Amazing and beautiful design. And clearly with some deep lore. I had the same feeling I have playing The Talos Principle in the sense of going through this space, not fully understanding the nature of my reality. Loved it. Great work!

Atmosphere is amazing. The sound design does a lot for that. Loved the theme and the simple game play. Could easily be expanded upon after the jam. Oh imagine this in VR. Great work!

(1 edit)

Thanks for playing on stream and getting the OMEGA ending ^_^ I have a lot of fun with VFX so I had to squeeze in something spectacular haha

Very polished and addictive game! Don't know what level I got to but I found myself playing for ages haha. Got pretty good. Best strat I found was flipping cards systematically instead of at random. Makes it way easier to remember where a card you've seen before it. Loved the art. Loved the sound. Great work!

Thank you ^_^ A team would definitely have helped hahaha

Love the innovation of using hand drawn on paper graphics :) It's charming and works with the lore you set up!

I found the combat a little tricky. I'm sure after practice it would get easier! Great work!

Thank you! I wanted to go easy on the jump scares since the game is more about cosmic or existential horror, but I did allow myself one to make use of the negative space :D I'd love to expand the game further. I have a lot of ideas for it.

Love the style! I love parrying in other games like Valheim and Witcher 3. I can see the concept being expanded into a game called Parry Knight where the hero can only parry :D  Great choice of art and sound effects. Good job!

Thank you for your feedback! Very useful. Urg, yh you're right about the bug. It looks like it locks up if the jounal is clicked while it is closing. Thanks for finding it. I'll get it polished out after the jam!

Thanks for playing! Glad you liked the option not to siphon your friends ^_^ If I were to expand the game further, the Selfless Ending would be another narrative branch. Either the player's character would switch to Mercia, or the player is severely weakened from giving so much blood. The Omega Ending is the only true ending so far.

I want a nice cup of tea and a custard cream now! You could market this to Yorkshire Tea haha.

A chill game that plays in well with the theme! Great work! Now to get a cup of tea!

That style is sick as hell. It's like some kind of demonic laser tag arena! Is the dungeon procedurally generated too? I found lots of treasure chests which opened but I don't know if I received anything. The intro page looked amazing as well with one of your amazing shiny enemies there waiting for you!

Gave me Slender: The 8 Pages vibes ^_^ Great old school aesthetic. The atmosphere was great!

Yes please! Thank you!

FANTASTIC! Didn't expect to have so much game here. Loved the premise. Loved the dialogue. The art is fantastic. You've got character customisation, a dating sim, dungeon crawler all in one week. I escaped with Cloud with 22 seconds to spare :o ooh I'd have been so mad to lose at that point haha. Brilliant game. Well done.

Wow absolutely gorgeous! I failed the first mission because I wasn't reading all the text in the cookbook, but succeeded on the later ones :D Love your aesthetic, and love synthwave. And an amazingly large game for just a week. Brilliant work!

Have you played Anno: Mutationem? Completely different gameplay but gave me similar vibes.

This was very fun ^_^ It reminds me of Dr Nim, except we are Dr Nim. I loved the creepy theme you went with for it. I spent ages trying to get the best times I could, not sure if the scoreboard is updating though.

Who can beat this? :D

I embraced my true self ^_^

Very calming and meditative game. I liked the affirmations a lot ! :D You definitely have a knack for the surreal. Each room was very different and dreamlike. Cool that you add a minigame in there as well! Great job!

Loved your hand-drawn artwork, and the concept! I couldn't get past the last guy. Whenever I spoke to him the dialogue seemed to get stuck, and I couldn't do anything when I got home. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Let me know! Because I imagine we make different delicious cookies based on the ingredient choices we make, which is very cool ^_^

This filled me with dread. On the one hand, I want cookies, on the other hand would I trade precious memories for a cookie?

Of course I would. Risk it for the biscuit!

The writing was really good. Almost poetic. Thanks for making it!

What a fun idea and the art is great! Loved the nomnomnom sound effects ^_^

So much depth to it. Keeping the crew happy, collecting cookies, dealing with the threats of the sea. All needing a good supply of biscuits.

Brilliant work!

Great sound design. And the UI was very juicy.  I couldn't get more than 19 but I am a risk taker haha. I'll have to come back to it and give it another go to beat my own score!

Wow! More peeps need to play this. Loved the style. Great use of post processing, and first I thought parallax, but is it actually 3D? Sooooo juicy. Gameplay gave me This War Of Mine Vibes, but more combat focused.

I had a great time :) Great work!

Love the art and voice acting ^_^ Fun and spooky take on red light green light!

Wow you have got great game feel in there. Combination of the animations and the audio. And screen shake or was that from the recoil? Great interpretation of the theme too.

Very juicy game. Great work!

Managed to fix it I think. Thanks again for pointing it out!

Thank you. I honestly had a lot of fun :) Best of luck and hope many more peeps get to play it!

Thank you for the feedback!

You mean the comments section on the page, right? Yh, I can not find a way to get the CSS to change the color of that. I'll see if I can make the text brighter. Always gotta be thinking about accessibility. Thanks again!

Thanks for playing and reaching the true ending! OMEGA!

Thank you for playing!

I spent way longer playing this than I expected ^_^ very addictive once I understood about the upgrades, and the intention wasn't to go all the way to the end in just one go. Love the visuals, the way things get smaller in the centre, suggesting we are spiralling downwards. Brilliant work!
