The next in a new batch of potential new profiles for this year, the Krion Conquest is a late entry Mega Man clone that borrows just about everything but the stage select. Even down to the weapon menu, you're going to see a lot that looks suspiciously like Capcom's blue bomber here. Yet, this is a game in the anime genre known as the "magical girl" trope. And your character uses magic instead of high tech weapons. While the progression is more Super Mario Bros. 1 than Mega Man. With four areas, four stages each (with a boss at the end of each fourth), plus a final fifth stage against some final bosses, not since Whomp Em' has a platformer felt so similar to Mega Man that it's almost plagiarism!
So what's the story of this little gem from Vic Tokai?
Known in Japan as Magical Kids Doropie (まじかるキッズどろぴー, Majikaru Kizzu Doropī) it was localized as the Krion Conquest.
The Japanese synopsis is as follows, as described by Wikipedia:
In the year 1999, the Akudama Empire (known as the Krion Empire outside Japan) rises suddenly and attacks the Earth with an army of robots. No conventional weapon is able to stop them; they are, however, totally vulnerable to magic. A hired mercenary, Kagemaru, summons the only non-sealed witch, Doropie (known as Francesca outside Japan), to stop the Akudama Empire's offense.[1] As she assaults the empire's hidden bases, Doropie discovers the army is led by the Machine God Emperor, whom Doropie had previously sealed away in the human world. The Emperor kidnaps Kagemaru and blackmails Doropie into breaking her seal. Kagemaru appears to die from his injuries, and Doropie sets out to stop the now-free Machine God Emperor. After a final battle aboard the Akudama Empire's space base, the dying Machine God Emperor confesses that she begun the invasion in response to humanity's destruction of nature. The base explodes shortly thereafter, but not before Doropie escapes it. She is contacted by Kagemaru, who has survived the wounds previously inflicted on him, and Doropie makes her way back to Earth
(This also answers the inevitable question as to why the boss rooms all have the Avengers logo. But I'm getting ahead of myself.)The American synopsis is as follows, as described by GameFAQs:
Once upon a time, long long ago, the world was experiencing great ruin. Enormous animals were bestowed upon the earth to create terrible pain and hardship for the people. The people were desperate, so they called upon the Old Witches' World for help.
Thence came Francesca, a gracious witch with great powers. She fought and saved the world from these terrible creatures. The land began to flourish again and the people worked peacefully together to rebuild their wonderful cities. All was well.
Now, we too are experiencing serious turmoil. Terrible horrid beings called Krions have decended upon our planet. We are prisoners and we are losing hope. Francesca, we need you. If you are out there, please come.
