Hey everyone, just published KARROTA, which is currently still in development, and have put a lot of time has been put in to make the game enjoyable.  I plan on adding more features to the game, including more enemies, power-ups, and possible alternate game modes. I'd love to get some feedback to know where to focus my efforts. Art is not final and I plan to add sound effects and background music in the near future.

The goal is simple, protect your 3 seeds for as long as possible. Skritter will spawn every turn to make your goal more difficult.  You have a limited number of lasers and moves at your disposal per turn. Use the action icons under each Skritter to plan ahead and beat your previous high score.  Taking your time is crucial to success, but feel free to hop in and out of a game with saving and loading. You can also change a couple of options and rearrange the on screen buttons to be more comfortable for you.

Adding a rule but not sure where to put it yet.

  • Whenever both players end their turn without doing an action; both players draw a card from their playbook.
  • Make Toss' Knock Down as a react to dealing damage
  • Knock Down gains health in reaction to knocking down

Changelog:

10/11/22

  • Added a list of game terms from the Game Terms card (with some slight rewording) to hopefully make the rules easier to understand.
  • Added some helper text next to some mention of Playbook and Bench to clarify that they are what we call deck and discard pile.

We here at Chill Dragon Studios aren't the strongest when it comes to writing and editing so we figured it may be beneficial to house the rules here on the community board for the time being. This will allow us to gain feedback from all of you about wording and clarity of rules while creating a sort of archive for players to read rule clarifications in the comments until we can get around to making the changes.

    • A character who is knocked down must bench a card (from their Hand, Cutoff Area, or Gear) before they may play or activate any cards.

BATTLE! Rules:

Before play begins each player will:

  • Set their Heart track to match their Character.
  • Set their Stamina track to 0.
  • Shuffle their playbook (deck) and set it face down next to their Character Card.
  • Determine who goes first (we usually roll some dice).

Time to Battle

Game play consists of players alternating turns until a winner is decided. A player wins the game when their opponent's Heart reaches 0. The first turn of the game a player may not play a Power move (card with the fist icon), but can complete any other action as normal. During play a player may activate their character’s Knack ability anytime, unless noted on the card.

A player's turn consists of three steps.

First Step

  • Gain 1 Stamina and recover any previously spent Stamina.
  • Draw up to your Character's Hand Size (cards set in the Cutoff Area count toward your Hand). If a player’s Playbook (deck) runs out, they will simply shuffle their Bench (discard pile) and continue to play with that as their Playbook.
  • Set any number of cards by placing them face down in the Cutoff Area.
  • Bench (discard) an attached Gear, or a set card. This cannot be done the same turn the card was attached or set.
  • Play a card to the Environment.
  • Use or attach Gear.

Combo Step

  • The attacking player may play Moves or Cutoffs to their Combo Area.
  • The defending player may play Cutoffs from their Cutoff Area to their Combo Area.
  • When the attacking player has finalized their combo, and the defending player is done playing Cutoffs; calculate damage from one card at a time ending with your Character’s Power.

Last Step

  •  Set a card by placing it face down in the Cutoff Area.
  • Bench an attached Gear, or a set card. This cannot be done the same turn the card was attached or set.
  • Play a card to the Environment.
  • Use or attach Gear.

Hey yo coaches! We here at Chill Dragon Studios figured some of you may want to learn more about us and the game. So we decided to introduce ourselves and talk a bit about our goals and other things you may find interesting about us or the game. Feel free to ask any questions and don't be afraid to give us feedback!

About Chill Dragon

Chill Dragon Studios is an idea a couple friends had to break up the grind of life a bit. We've always loved playing games, whether they were video or board. Constantly talking about house rules and ideas for games of our own but never really committing to finishing them. If we enjoy these half thought out games, maybe others will as well. So we decided to commit to creating these things we enjoy and finish some of these games! That led to the creation of Battle! which you can learn about in the next section. First, we'll talk about our goals for the future of Chill Dragon.

We don't just enjoy just the idea or playing aspects of board games, we also thought it would be cool to create physical versions of them as well. We'd also thought it would be cool to do so in a way that is as friendly to the environment as we can make it. Having a product that doesn't over stay its welcome on the planet. We hope to have everything shipped with our games 100% compostable. Using recycled and/or renewable products and those that are sourced responsibly. We are hoping to grow with this idea in mind and learn more about things we can do to create awesome games with as little impact at the environment as possible.

About Battle!

Our goal, when creating Battle! was to offer a fresh, yet familiar, experience to those who may have played other popular trading card games, while also creating rules that were easy to learn and remember, for those who may be new to trading card games. We also wanted a game that could be quick to play so you could squeeze in a game or two between things that needed to get done. We believe we've got a great foundation that accomplishes those goals in a fun way that can be expanded upon in some really interesting way.

We hope to release physical versions and print and play versions of Battle! which will cover different characters and stories within the various Battle! layers of reality. To start this process we have made print and play starter decks, or playbooks, set in the Battle! Bugs layer.  We hope to gain feedback and have the community help direct the development of Battle!

With the creation of PnP playbooks we wanted them to be easy to print and build, so we limited each PnP file to 3 pages. This allowed us to have a playbook size of 23 cards, 1 character card, and 3 cards dedicated to learning and helping play the game. You and a friend can each print and cut out a playbook, then grab a die or two and have everything you need to play a game of Battle!

We'll leave it at that, for now. If you have any questions feel free to ask and we'll either answer you directly or expand upon the answer with its own post!

Thanks for reading!
