Version 4.0 has now been fully deployed, including a follow-up maintenance patch to address community feedback and a handful of issues discovered after release.

This update introduces one of the biggest changes to deck building so far:

Deck Budget System

Deck construction is no longer just about choosing the strongest cards available.

Every card now carries a Hash Weight value, creating a deck budget that players must manage when building competitive decks.

This opens the door to more meaningful deck building decisions, greater card variety, and a healthier long-term card ecosystem. Powerful cards now carry a larger budget cost, while lower-cost cards can help create unique strategies that weren't previously viable.

A special thank you to Bitcoin Suffolk for helping spark the original idea behind this system.

Audio Improvements

We've resolved issues where audio settings could unexpectedly reset when moving between scenes.

Your chosen audio preferences should now persist correctly throughout gameplay, creating a smoother experience between menus, matches, and hub areas.

Daily Challenge Fixes

Following reports from the community, we've fixed an issue affecting Daily Challenge tracking and completion.

Special thanks to Killer B (over in our community discord) for helping identify and report the problem.

The latest Extended Alpha update has now been deployed and brings one of the biggest progression updates yet to BTC: Proof of Play.

Daily Challenges are now active - giving players new objectives each day to complete while battling, mining, unlocking lanes and experimenting with different strategies across the game. The goal is to make every session feel rewarding while still keeping the spirit of proof of work and proof of play intact.

Alongside Dailies, we’ve also been reworking the wider game economy and progression systems. Rewards, XP gain, mining pacing and shop balancing have all been adjusted as we continue trying to hit that sweet spot between meaningful progression and long-term grind value.

This update also introduces new cards, gameplay tweaks, multiplayer improvements, UI polish and a large wave of fixes across the game.

Now comes the important part - testing.

We need players jumping in, pushing the systems hard and letting us know:

🔶 Is progression too slow or too fast?

🔶 Does the economy feel fair?

🔶 Are rewards satisfying without becoming excessive?

We’ve just released the latest update for BTC: Proof of Play on itch.io, and the game has come a long way since its first early alpha builds.

BTC: Proof of Play is a Bitcoin-themed 1v1 strategy card battler where players build decks, play cards to the board, attack their opponent’s Network Integrity, and use Bitcoin-inspired mechanics, characters, and events to win matches.

The project started as a small experimental Bitcoin card game, but over time it has grown into a fuller playable alpha with online matches, offline AI testing, deck building, card collection systems, visual polish, achievements, cosmetics, and a lot more structure around the core gameplay.

In this latest update, we’ve focused mostly on polish, usability, and match stability rather than adding huge new systems. Some of the recent improvements include:

• Better UI anchoring across different screen sizes
• Improved pause behaviour during online matches
• Cleaner handling for SatSlaps / taunts
• Fixes to Signal card passive effects
• Better handling of cards with non-numeric attack/defence values
• General online and offline gameplay fixes
• Early Founders badges for some of the first supporters and testers

We’re still in Open Alpha, so there will absolutely be rough edges, but the game is now in a much better place than it was even a few weeks ago. Feedback is very welcome, especially around match flow, card clarity, UI readability, and whether the overall game loop makes sense to new players.

The newest BTC: Proof of Play update has now dropped ...

This one brings a fresh round of fixes, polish, and gameplay improvements as we continue tightening up the Open Alpha experience.

What’s new:

• SatSlaps / Taunts update - cleaner behaviour and better online-only handling
• Signal card fixes - passive effects now behave more reliably and ignore non-numeric “-” stats properly
• Pause system improvements - online pause behaviour has been cleaned up so it does not interfere with the other player
• UI anchoring polish - improved screen layout handling across different resolutions
• Gameplay tweaks and bug fixes - more stability across online and offline matches
• Founders badges are appearing - some early supporters may now notice special Founders badges in-game

This update is another step toward making BTC: Proof of Play smoother, clearer, and more fun to play as we head toward bigger public testing and BTC Prague prep.

Introducing: 🔸Fragments🔸

Fragments are a new resource earned during gameplay that unlock powerful abilities mid-match.

You’ll generate Fragments through your actions - then spend them to swing the game in your favour at the perfect moment.

🔹 Available Abilities:

▶️ Surge (Cost: 2)

Boost a friendly card’s attack power to push through damage or secure a takedown.

▶️ Hotfix (Cost: 2)

Restore health - either stabilise yourself or keep a key card alive.

▶️ Rebuild (Cost: 1)

Reinforce a card’s defence to strengthen your board presence.

▶️ Switch (Cost: 3)

Reposition a card between lanes for tactical advantage.

Why This Matters?

Fragments add a new decision layer to every match:

This update includes a major backend and login flow rework focused on moving away from the older hard-locked HWID/device binding system and toward a more flexible roaming account session model.

What changed

• Reworked account access logic to support roaming session-based login
• Reduced reliance on hard locked HWID-only account access
• Players can now move their account between supported devices more cleanly without being permanently tied to one machine
• Added improved session validation to better manage active logins
• Added resume session handling so accounts can recover more reliably after reconnects, restarts, or interrupted play
• Introduced heartbeat/session activity checks to monitor whether an account session is still legitimately active
• Added logic to detect stale or expired sessions so old locks do not remain in place unnecessarily
• Improved handling for duplicate session conflicts
• Added support for controlled session takeover/reclaim logic where appropriate
• Improved backend support for registered/known device tracking without relying purely on HWID lock behaviour
• Expanded internal tools for clearing old account/session keys in batches to support testing, maintenance, and future live operations
• Carried out backend testing around removing legacy device lock states from accounts
• Improved long-term maintainability of account access and login recovery systems

Why this matters

Previously, account access was much more tightly bound to a single device or hardware identity. That worked for early testing, but it was restrictive and not ideal for players who want to resume play across devices or recover access more smoothly.

This rework is aimed at making account login feel more modern, flexible, and maintainable while still protecting against duplicate or invalid sessions.

In testing / ongoing work

This system is still being actively tested and refined. The goal is to ensure:

• smoother multi-device account access
• safer session recovery
• fewer false lockouts
• cleaner handling of expired or abandoned sessions

We’ve just pushed a new Open Alpha update for BTC: Proof of Play.

This update focuses on polish, clean-up, and improving some of the card reward presentation in-game. One of the main fixes in this patch is bringing the Reward Card UI more in line with spec, including correcting effect text display and tightening up a number of visual details across the reward card presentation.

We’ve also made a range of smaller fixes and general improvements as we continue shaping the overall experience.

We’ve been hard at work behind the scenes bringing BTC: Proof of Play to mobile devices, and it’s starting to look really good.

This has been a bigger task than it might sound. The game was originally designed for PC, so moving everything to touch controls meant reworking quite a few systems - card interactions, targeting, UI scaling, and camera controls. But the progress so far has been fantastic.

The core gameplay is already working smoothly on mobile:

• Touch controls for selecting and playing cards

• Card combat and targeting

• Match flow and turn phases

• Mining interactions and UI navigation

There are still a few things we’re polishing - mainly UI scaling across different phone sizes, touch precision, and some visual layout adjustments - but the game already feels very playable on a phone.

Our goal is simple:
Make BTC Proof of Play something you can jump into anywhere - whether you’re at your desk or waiting for the next Bitcoin price move.

This is still work in progress, but the mobile client is shaping up nicely and we’re excited about where it’s heading.

More updates soon as we continue refining the mobile experience.

We’ve been working on a Bitcoin card game - Open Alpha is live if you’re curious

We wanted to share a bit more detail on the core mechanics we’ve been introducing in BTC: Proof of Play, and the thinking behind them.

At its heart, the game is a turn-based card battler, but we’ve tried to avoid copying existing systems wholesale. Instead, we’ve leaned into mechanics that feel closer to Bitcoin concepts, while still being readable and playable if you’ve never touched a wallet in your life.

🔸Network Integrity (Health) Rather than traditional “HP”, each player has Network Integrity. This represents the resilience of your network as a whole. Some cards can attack it directly, others pressure it indirectly by removing defenders or draining your ability to respond.

🔸Hashrate (Energy / Tempo) Hashrate replaces the usual mana system. It represents your ability to act efficiently each turn. Some cards generate hashrate over time, others consume it aggressively for stronger effects. Managing hashrate is less about hitting a curve and more about timing and pressure.

🔸Cards as Active Infrastructure Cards placed on the board aren’t just attackers. Many provide ongoing effects - generating hashrate, shielding your network, chaining bonuses with neighbouring cards, or unlocking tactical advantages over time. Board positioning matters, not just card value.

🔸Chaining & Synergy Certain cards gain bonuses when played adjacent to compatible cards. These “chains” are visible on the board and can be broken by attacks, adding a layer of spatial decision-making. It rewards planning, but also creates moments where disrupting an opponent’s setup is just as valuable as dealing damage.

🔸Evergreen vs Seasonal Cards We split cards into two pools:

• Evergreen cards that are always available
• Seasonal cards that rotate in with new releases

Unlocks are weighted toward evergreen cards to keep the game stable over time, while seasonal cards introduce fresh mechanics without permanently bloating the pool.

🔸Mining & Progression (Outside Matches) Outside of matches, players unlock cards and resources through a mining-inspired system. It’s deliberately slow, transparent, and non-extractive. No timers designed to nag you - just steady progression that respects your time.

🔸Optional Lightning Tipping At the end of a match, players can optionally tip sats to each other using Lightning. This is fully non-custodial and entirely optional. It’s there as a social gesture, not a requirement, and has no impact on gameplay balance.

The game is currently in Open Alpha, so balance, pacing, and clarity are all still being tuned. The goal right now isn’t perfection - it’s learning what feels good, what feels confusing, and what deserves more depth.

If you’re curious, we’d love people to poke at it, play a few matches, and tell us what works and what doesn’t.

We are deep into preparing and customising all the bits players will need to be able to play an OPEN Alpha version of BTC Proof of Play.

Want to know why we called the game "BTC Proof of Play" ... ?

"When you want to have a (money) network where no one is in charge (where you don't want a central authority), you need a mechanism which can tell you which transaction was first, and which transactions have happened in the first place. Otherwise, how would you know that when Alice pays Bob, Alice actually has the funds to do so?

With traditional money, banks take on the role of transaction ordering authority. But you don't want authorities on a decentralized money like bitcoin (because authority = single point of failure).

What proof of work mechanism does, is letting anyone add the current transactions to the previous list of transactions every ten minutes. But in order to do so, they need to put in resources (electricity, hardware). This is needed in order to avoid cheating and spam. If you could order the transactions (= creating new blocks) for free, you wouldn't have any incentives to behave and to be beneficial to the network.

So proof of work is something like a timestamping mechanism which lets anyone willing participate (without a need for a central authority), but requires resources in order to avoid "bad" behaviour." - TheGreatMuffin (Reddit)

So,  we took Proof of Work and applied that same energy and ideology to BTC Proof of Play... as you play, you earn (unlock) cards and resources - just like Proof of Work.

What This Is

• An Open Alpha, not a launch

• Features, balance, UI, and flow are still evolving

• Expect bugs, rough edges, and things changing quickly

That’s the point.

What We Want You To Do

Please do all of the following:

• Play matches (Online or vs AI)

• Test cards, turns, targeting, and pacing

• Try things you think might break the game

• Record gameplay

• Take screenshots

• Stream it

• Share clips, bugs, and feedback publicly

Noise is good. Visibility helps.

How To Play (Quick Start)

Controls

• Click cards to select them

• Drag cards from your hand to valid play slots

• Click enemy cards or targets to attack

• Click empty space to cancel actions

• Tooltips appear when hovering cards and UI

Match Flow

1. Coin toss decides who goes first

2. Draw phase happens automatically

3. Play cards if you have enough Hashrate

4. Attack with cards or directly if shields are down

5. Reduce your opponent’s Network Integrity to win

Core Concepts

• Network Integrity = Health

• Hashrate = Energy / Resource used to play and attack

• Sparks = Common in-game currency

• Shards = Premium in-game currency

Everything is Bitcoin-themed on purpose.

Economy (Alpha Values)

For the Open Alpha, all players start with:

• 420 Sparks

• 21 Shards

This is a testing balance.
Progress may reset between Alpha phases.

Lightning Payments (Important)

Lightning may be enabled during the Open Alpha.

• Payments are real

• They currently grant in-game currency only

• No sats are transferred between players

• Consider this testing Lightning UX, not spending money in a live economy

Only tip or purchase if you’re comfortable doing so.

If something feels wrong, confusing, broken, or exploitable:

• That’s valuable

• Screenshot or record it

• Tell us what happened and what you expected

This Alpha exists to harden the game.

I wanted to share a project we’ve been building called BTC: Proof of Play - a competitive, Hearthstone-inspired digital card game built from the ground up around Bitcoin culture, mechanics, and values.

This isn’t a generic “crypto-skinned” game. The entire world is Bitcoin-native:

⚡Hashrate as energy
🛡 Network Integrity as health
⛏ Mining systems, mempool themes, and protocol-inspired cards
🃏 Custom decks, online 1v1s, offline AI, progression, skins, boards, and more

Important: BTC: Proof of Play does not use any real blockchain, wallets, NFTs, or background mining. There is no real compute, no GPU/CPU mining, and no on-chain activity. All “mining” is purely an in-game, fictional game mechanic.  It does however use the Bitcoin Lightning network to enable payments for items, cosmetics and gameplay items in Bitcoin. No wallet connection, simply QR codes. Simplicity!

Over the last year I’ve been developing it in Unity, running closed alphas, and actively shaping it with early players and Bitcoiners. We’ve been testing things like global multiplayer, deck building, mining-based rewards, taunts/emotes, and even optional Lightning integrations for in-game tipping and digital perks.

The closed alpha has just wrapped, and the next phase is focused on polish, balance, content expansion, and opening things up more publicly.

One of the core pillars of BTC: Proof of Play is native Bitcoin culture - and that means Lightning done properly.

Over the past phase of development, a big focus has been building out a secure Lightning layer that doesn’t lock players into a single provider.

We’re implementing our Lightning system so it can support multiple wallets and backends, rather than being hard-coded to one service. This gives us a flexible foundation that can evolve over time and keeps player experience at the centre.

What this means in practice:

• A modular Lightning system inside the game

• Support for multiple wallet providers

• No private keys or sensitive data inside the client

• All Lightning interactions abstracted behind secure backend services

• The ability to swap, add, or upgrade providers without touching the core game

Right now, Lightning is already live in-game for things like purchases and tipping flows, and the next step is expanding this into a more open multi-wallet architecture.

This work is laying the groundwork for future features where Lightning becomes a natural part of the BTC: Proof of Play ecosystem - without compromising player security or flexibility.

We wanted to share an important update about the project.

BTCG has officially been rebranded to BTC: Proof of Play.

This change doesn’t affect the game, the vision, or the roadmap – it’s purely a name and identity update as we continue building toward a wider release.

Why the change?

As development has progressed, it became clear that we needed a name that:

• Clearly stands apart as its own original project

• Better reflects what we’re actually building

• Avoids confusion as we move toward public launch, physical cards, and a Kickstarter

BTC: Proof of Play captures what this project is really about:

A strategy card game inspired by Bitcoin’s culture, ideas, and energy – where gameplay, not speculation, is the focus.

What isn’t changing

Everything you’ve seen so far stays the same:

• The digital card game

• The upcoming physical cards

• The mining, hashrate, and network mechanics

• The community-first, indie, collector-driven approach

• ESC cards already sent or in circulation

Your early cards, screenshots, and memories are all part of the project’s history. They now simply sit under the broader Proof of Play banner.

What is changing

Over the coming days you’ll see:

• Updated logos and branding

• Website and social updates

• In-game title changes

• Store and Kickstarter materials aligned to the new name

Development continues as normal alongside this.

One important note

Although BTC: Proof of Play is inspired by Bitcoin’s ideas, memes, and culture, this game does not use real blockchain technology, tokens, or on-chain assets.
Any Lightning features are optional, and you don’t need Bitcoin to play.

Happy New Year everyone.

We’ve kicked off 2026 straight back in dev mode and have been pushing a lot of new content and improvements into BTC Proof of Play over the last few days.

This build isn’t about one single feature - it’s about tightening the whole experience and laying foundations for what’s coming next.

⚙️ New Year Dev Content (in progress)

In dev mode we’ve been adding and testing a wave of new content and systems, including:

• New and reworked cards

• Ongoing balance passes

• Combat flow, aura/signal, and destruction timing improvements

• AI + offline match fixes

• UI, feedback, and interaction polish

• Backend and sync improvements

• General bug fixes and stability work

A lot of this is groundwork, but it’s already making the game feel more solid, clearer to play, and closer to the experience we want long-term.

📦 ESC Packs Are Going Out

The first batch of ESC (Early Supporter Card) packs have now been sent out and should be landing with the first group of supporters any day now.

Seeing real BTCG cards in envelopes heading out into the world is honestly surreal.

Thank you to everyone who supported early and helped get BTCG to this stage. This is a big milestone for the project.

More physical content and follow-ups are already being worked on.

🌐 Website Refresh + BTC Proof of Play Store (Side Quest)

Alongside game development, the website has been getting a refresh, and we’ve quietly opened a small BTC Proof of Play store section.

It’s very much a side quest - stickers, wearables, mugs, and a few inside-joke designs tied to the project and the journey so far.

Not the main mission.
Just another way to support the build and rep BTC Proof of Play if you want to.
