Hi! It would be awesome to have an artist on the team! I sent a friend request on discord, let me know if you're still interested! discord - bifrostguardian

Hi! It would be awesome to have someone do sound effects for the game! I sent a friend request on discord, let me know if you're still interested! discord - bifrostguardian

Hi all! I have been solo developing a game for this jam, only doing programming so far. Additional assistance with non-code related assets would be awesome! Below I have listed the roles I am still looking for, as well as a description of my game idea. Let me know if you are interested in filling any of these roles for this jam game!

Help Wanted:

Artist/Animator

  • 2D side-scrolling game
  • Gothic horror aesthetic
  • Dark fantasy monsters, environments, characters, and effects
  • Character and enemy animation experience is a plus

Music/Sound Design

  • Gothic horror atmosphere
  • Dark fantasy ambience
  • Boss themes, exploration music, sound effects, and creature audio

Story Writer

  • Gothic horror themes
  • Dark fantasy worldbuilding
  • Character lore, item descriptions, environmental storytelling, and dialogue

Game Idea:

  • Chosen theme: Controlled Side Effects
  • Setting Idea: Classic gothic to Victorian gothic eras, with classic gothic horror icons (vampires, werewolves, mummies, Frankenstein’s Monster, Van Helsing, Dr Jekyll and Hyde, etc.)
  • Theme Mechanic:
    • Player collects elemental runes that can each be slotted into one of three abilities at a time
      • Example elements: Fire, Ice, Wind, Electricity
    • Each elemental rune + ability combo creates different effects and side effects that alter both combat and traversal in meaningful ways.
      • Each rune does not function as a standalone spell. Instead, it modifies how an ability behaves when slotted into it.
    • Ability Gates require the use of side effects of abilities to progress
      • Examples:
        • Ice Interaction:
          • Freeze an enemy in place, then use their frozen body as a temporary platform to reach higher ledges or hidden routes.
        • Fire Interaction:
          • Burn environmental obstacles such as ropes or wooden supports, causing structures to collapse or reveal new pathways.
        • Electricity Interaction:
          • Power ancient mechanisms, activate dormant machines, or chain through conductive surfaces to unlock sealed areas.
        • Wind Interaction:
          • Redirect falling debris, push lightweight platforms, or manipulate airflow.
    • Controlled Side Effects System
      • Every elemental combination produces both a primary effect and a secondary side effect.
        • Primary effect: The intended function of the ability (damage, movement, etc.)
        • Side effect: An environmental or systemic consequence that may help, hinder, or alter the battlefield
      • These side effects are not random, they are designed to be predictable, learnable, and usable strategically, reinforcing the theme of “Controlled Side Effects.”
    • Ultimately, the player is not just using abilities, they are managing the consequences of those abilities in a living, reactive world.

Awesome! My discord is bifrostguardian

Hi there! I'm still looking for a composer for my game, and I liked the stuff on your site. I'm currently the sole developer and programmer of my game. My idea is a gothic horror vibe with characters like vampires, werewolves, mummies, etc. Let me know if that sounds interesting to you

Cool game! I like the art style, I thought it was a little creepy/cute. The sound design was nice as well and the music made the game pretty ominous

Great game! I really liked the aesthetic and the camera work! Could have used more horror but the soundtrack was pretty ominous

Thanks for playing and thanks for the review!

Thanks for playing the game! Glad the jumpscares worked :)

Great visual aesthetic and horror elements, good game overall. I loved the driving, and liked all the puzzles in the first part. I managed to beat the first part of the stealth section but was locked out of the second part somehow after falling off the map (lol)

Here's my late game submission link: https://bifrostgames.itch.io/the-faded-forest

Additional Changes

Player Controller

  • Increased gravity
  • Decreased wall "clinginess"

Awesome jam game! I thought the puzzle mechanics were really clever and incorporate the theme in a really creative way.

I don't usually play rhythm games, but I really like the pixel art style and sound design of this game. The one track is great, would be cool to see multiple songs added!

Really great game! A tutorial is needed, but I figured out how to play from the comments! My strategy was to go for all the squares with 4 different colored turtles first (because they don't need to be rotated) Also, I didn't realize at first that the bumps on the circles on the left were indicating the same thing that the colors of the circles were (which is super helpful for colorblind players like myself)

Great interpretation of the theme! I thought the climbing mechanics and player animations were really well done and the leaderboard is a great touch.

Great jam game! I thought the scaling mechanic was a solid interpretation of the theme and a great way to add a puzzle element to a top down 2D game!

Congrats on your team's first game jam! I thought Square Escape was really fun, well polished, and a clever take on the sliding-grid puzzle game that tied in the jam's theme subtly yet meaningfully.

Great game and jam submission! It reminds me of speed running building a house in Minecraft. I thought, the two slot inventory system as a stack worked really well for the building system, especially paired with the facing/pick up  mechanic.

Sure do! Add my discord (bifrostguardian) and send me a message to let me know its you.

Awesome. If you could do SFX and music that would be great. Add me on discord so we can communicate better: bifrostguardian

Edit: Send me a message once you add me on discord so I know it is you.

Hi I am BifrostGames, an intermediate indie developer. I've done group and solo work, so I have exerience in all aspects of game development.

For this jam, I'd like to write the code. I am looking for

Artists: art, animations, either 2D or 3D works, you choose the art style

Sound Designers: music, sfx, or both, open to many styles

Looking to have fun with this jam developing an idle game. Contact me if you are interested

You can press P to pause the game, and then select "No" when asked if you want to continue.

Unfortunately you cannot use the score boxes to hide behind XD

Stay tuned for a difficulty curve update coming soon...

Great game! Made me want to keep playing. However, getting all upgrade dice when I had nothing to upgrade was very upsetting. I do think I made it to second on the leaderboard though

A set-up period would be nice and a way to pick between rolling an upgrade or a critter. Also being able to roll multiple dice at a time

Awesome concept. I almost went with a similar idea where you rolled dice and chose which stats to apply them too.

Some notes:

  • The player hit box felt too big
  • Felt like not enough space to move around
  • I like that enemies drop ammo, but having them have a chance to drop health would be helpful

I love this! So creative to make a clicker-game based on "roll of the dice"

Fun and creative puzzle game!

Very simple yet creative idea. Once I developed a strategy it became quite enjoyable. I love the aesthetic of the art

Very polished! I like all the different abilities and enemy types

Great sound design as well

I like the main shapeshifting mechanic and the different move mechanics for each animal. The Pangolin was my favorite to use.

It was a little glitchy at times

Really challenging yet fun game. I love the art style

Really well done!

The wall jump was a little unforgiving, and taking so much environmental damage was annoying (it almost felt worth it to go back to the nearest rest stop to heal after hitting spikes once because two hits and I'm dead). The smallest blobs are also annoying because they can only be shot while they are jumping, but I guess that adds to the difficulty.

I really love the art, music, and story telling!

That was the original intent for the role of the AI character. Didn't make the cut before the deadline unfortunately, but could be present in a future update.

I was wondering if anyone would find the jump-attack glitch. I thought it would be hard enough to find to worry about fixing it before the deadline

Thanks for playing!

Thanks for playing! In game guidance was the thing I was most bummed I didn't have time to add. If I have any future updates it'll be added for sure

Thanks for playing and giving feedback. I'm looking forward to going back and fixing a lot of these issues.

In the mean time, I'll definitely be checking out your teams game
